About the Speaker 

舛友雄大(Masutomo Takehiro) 出生於1985年，日本福岡縣人。現為早稻田大學日本全球經濟研究所招聘研究員，長期關注中國與東南亞的政治、經濟與社會議題。他曾在中國財經媒體《財新傳媒》工作，也曾在新加坡國立大學李光耀公共政策學院擔任研究員，累積豐富的國際採訪與研究經驗。舛友精通中文、英文、日文及印尼文，主持Podcast節目《Asia Frontline》，並在NHK新聞廣播節目《マイあさ！》擔任東亞與東南亞情勢解說員。

This event introduces Run to Japan, the much-discussed new book by Japanese international journalist Takehiro Masutomo. The work offers an in-depth examination of the rise of “runxue” (“the study of running”) in contemporary China—a social trend in which people choose to “run” (i.e., leave) China in search of freer and more dignified lives. Drawing on years of overseas reporting and field research, the book documents a wide spectrum of “run-to-Japan” migrants: entrepreneurs, intellectuals, dissident media figures, and middle-class families who left for the sake of their children’s education. Their stories together paint a vivid portrait of China’s modern landscape of anxiety, mobility, and aspiration.

Masutomo not only explores the lived experiences and inner journeys of these new migrants, but also reflects on how Japanese society is receiving and interpreting this wave of “new overseas Chinese.” He guides readers through the social dynamics behind “runxue,” revealing the real struggles of contemporary Chinese people as they navigate pressure and pursue freedom, and discusses the new interactions and challenges emerging between China and Japan amid this migration trend.
