A Tower Built Downwards by Yang Lian

她離開中國後正式開始文學創作,迄今在中國、台灣及海外出版中短篇小說集、長篇小說及個人畫冊共13部,其中兩部小說已譯成英文:《Ghost Tide》(HarperCollins/Fourth Estate,2005)與《One Man's Decision to Become a Tree》(德國柏林 PalmArtPress,2023)。

Rapid globalization poses new questions for contemporary Chinese-language writing. How can writing in Chinese matter to the world? The question is not only why we write, but how. How can a writer keep deepening their work and build a "small tradition" of their own, one that is both distinctly individual and universally meaningful? Poet Yang Lian and his wife, the novelist and painter Youyou, who live between the UK and Germany, draw on decades of writing while wandering the world as willing outsiders, testing their creed: "There is no heaven, but we must resist every hell."

About the Speakers

Yang Lian was born in Switzerland in 1955 and grew up in Beijing. He began writing poetry in the late 1970s and rose to fame in 1983 with his long poem "Nuorilang." He has published fifteen collections of poetry in Chinese, two essay collections, and a book of criticism, and his work has been translated into more than thirty languages. His honors include Italy's Lerici Pea Lifetime Achievement Award, Poland's Zbigniew Herbert International Literary Award, the English PEN Award, the Janus Pannonius Grand Prize for Poetry, the Capri International Poetry Prize, and the Nonino International Literary Prize. He has twice been elected to the board of PEN International and is a member of the Norwegian Academy for Literature and Freedom of Expression. His English-language collections include A Tower Built Downwards (Bloodaxe Books) and the bilingual Riding Pisces: Poems from Five Collections (Shearsman Books).

Youyou is a novelist and painter who began writing seriously after leaving China. She has published 13 books of fiction and art in China, Taiwan, and abroad, including two novels in English translation: Ghost Tide (Fourth Estate, 2005) and One Man's Decision to Become a Tree (PalmArtPress, 2023). Her fiction has been described as "realist magic." As a visual artist, she has held solo exhibitions in many countries, and her painting Castle in the Air won the Special Prize for Foreign Artists at the 46th International Art Exhibition in Sulmona, Italy, in 2018.
