This October, JF Salon moves from literary memory to the workings of power. Hong Kong–born, Taipei-based novelist Gigi Leung reflects on fiction as a form of memory through Everyday Movement. Award-winning journalist Bethany Allen revisits Beijing Rules to show how the Trump administration has adopted China's authoritarian economic playbook. NPR's Emily Feng tells the untold story of Uyghur exiles who fled China's police state only to reshape Syria's civil war. Rebecca Blumenstein and Diana Kapp discuss The Last Free Women, the journeys of four Afghan women after the fall of Kabul. Mid-month, Pulitzer Prize winner Yiyun Li visits JF Books to sign her new historical novel Music Against the Night, and Fuchsia Dunlop invites us into the "five tastes" of Chinese cooking. To close the month, Red Roulette author Desmond Shum speaks in Chinese on power, wealth, and the fate of China's private entrepreneurs in the Xi Jinping era.

Everyday Movement: Fiction, Memory, and the Afterlives of Upheaval 
In this talk, Gigi L. Leung reflects on fiction as a literary form of memory—how it records not only events, but the textures of lived experience that resist documentation. Drawing from Everyday Movement, she considers how ordinary life becomes a site where history quietly accumulates: in pauses, repetitions, misrecognitions, and shifting intimacies. Rather than offering resolution, the talk explores writing as an attentive practice—one that holds contradiction, fragmentation, and ambiguity, and allows narrative to remain open to what cannot be fully said or fixed.
About the Speaker
Gigi Leung 梁莉姿 is a novelist and poet from Hong Kong who now lives in Taipei. She is the author of The Melancholy of Trees and Everyday Movement, both originally written and published in Chinese. The English edition of Everyday Movement, translated by Jennifer Feeley, was published by Riverhead Books in February 2026. Her work has received major literary honors, including the Golden Tripod Award for Literature and the TSMC Literary Award, and was also a finalist for the Taipei Literary Award.

DC Rules: How the Trump Administration Is Following China's Authoritarian Economic Playbook 
In her 2023 book Beijing Rules: How China Weaponized Its Economy to Confront the World, award-winning journalist Bethany Allen showed how China uses the power of its economy to extend its authoritarian reach and how democracies can respond. Three years later, instead of countering China's authoritarian economic coercion with democratic principles, the Trump administration has embraced the same playbook to achieve some of the same goals, including the erosion of international human rights protections and the end of the liberal rules-based order. In this talk, Allen will demonstrate how Trump has used similar tactics as Xi Jinping, but to much greater effect. She will also propose ways that global democracy can rise from the ashes.
About the Speaker
Bethany Allen is an award-winning journalist and author who has covered China, national security, and espionage for more than a decade. Bethany has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlantic. She served as China reporter for Foreign Policy magazine and Axios, and in 2022 she opened Axios' first-ever foreign bureau in Taiwan. Her book Beijing Rules: How China Weaponized Its Economy to Confront the World (Harper, 2023) was listed by the Financial Times as a Best Business Book of 2023, and was also long-listed for the FT-Schroders Best Business Book of the Year award.

Our Hearts Burned for Home: Uyghur Militants in Syria's Civil War 
What drove a few thousand men and women from western China to the front lines of Syria's war? NPR international correspondent Emily Feng unearths the untold story of Uyghur exiles who fled China's expanding police state—only to become a pivotal force behind the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime. At the heart of this narrative is a startling paradox: Beijing's repression, meant to crush dissent, instead scattered and radicalized a generation.

About the Speaker
Emily Feng is a White House correspondent at NPR. Previously, she was a foreign correspondent for NPR covering China, Taiwan, and beyond. She has received multiple journalism awards for her exceptional work.
About the Moderator
James Hider is NPR's Middle East editor. Hider has worked for years in the Middle East, first as the deputy bureau chief for AFP news agency in Jerusalem during the height of the second Palestinian Intifada, then covering the US-British invasion of Iraq and the subsequent civil war there for The Times of London. In 2011, he covered the Arab Spring uprisings, first from Tahrir Square in Egypt, then from the front lines in the Libyan civil war. He has reported from almost all the countries in the region, including Yemen and Syria.

Rebecca Blumenstein, NBC News President, Editorial, and author Diana Kapp discuss The Last Free Women: A Daring Escape from Afghanistan and Coming of Age in America. Blumenstein, a top editor at The New York Times during the fall of Kabul in 2021, oversaw a mad scramble to evacuate 200 individuals to safety, part of the largest wave of refugees since the Vietnam War. Told through the journeys of four Afghan women, The Last Free Women is a story of unflinching hope that explores duty, the basic rights of women, and the humanity that links us all.
About the Speakers
Rebecca Blumenstein is President, Editorial of NBC News, where she manages newsgathering and operations around the world, digital and flagship shows including NBC Nightly News, Meet the Press, and Dateline. From 2017 to 2023, she was a Deputy Managing Editor at The New York Times and worked closely with New York Times Publisher A.G. Sulzberger as Deputy Editor, Publisher's Office. She spent 22 years as a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal, rising to Deputy Editor-in-Chief. She led the China team that won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting. She was named chair of the board of the Columbia Journalism Review in August 2022 and was named to the Aspen Institute's Henry Crown Fellowship in 2009.
Diana Kapp is a journalist who writes frequently about the intersection of women and modern culture, and has traveled in Afghanistan to report on the education of girls in the country's rural northern provinces. Her longform pieces have been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Elle, More, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Marie Claire, among other publications. She is the author of two YA books profiling female changemakers, Girls Who Run the World and Girls Who Green the World.
About the Moderator
Fahim Abed is an investigations editor with Lighthouse Reports and a 2023 Nieman fellow at Harvard. He was a reporter for The New York Times in Afghanistan until the Taliban takeover of the country in August 2021.

A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, a Pulitzer Prize, and a PEN/Faulkner Award, she teaches at Princeton University and frequently contributes to The New Yorker.

Five Tastes: Delicious Recipes for Chinese Flavors 
When people in ancient China spoke of the "five tastes," they were talking not only literally about the five tastes recognized in Chinese gastronomy—sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty—but also metaphorically about all the ingredients and flavors at a cook's disposal. They were part of the dynamic process of the cosmos, like the five elements and the constant flux of yin and yang. In her new cookbook, Fuchsia Dunlop invites readers to harness some of the flavors of traditional Chinese cuisine to create easy, exciting, and healthy dishes in their own kitchens.
About the Speaker
Fuchsia Dunlop 扶霞 has been eating, cooking, and researching Chinese food since the 1990s, when she trained as a chef at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine (四川高等烹飪學校) in Chengdu. A fluent Chinese speaker, she has traveled widely in China over the past three decades, documenting recipes and local food traditions.
