Since its establishment in 1997, JF Books has been working to create and establish a public platform for knowledge exchange based on the concept of "Let Thoughts Speak." JF Salon is an important component of JF Books, covering areas such as philosophy, history, literature, and art. It invites renowned scholars and writers to interact with readers, advocating for the integration of thinking into lifestyle.

JF Salon Announcement of November

This November, join us for eight nights of conversations that explore China in all its complexity—past, present, and personal. From Karen Ma on post-’80s indie filmmakers reshaping rural China, to poet Wang Jiaxin reflecting on memory and exile; from Minxin Pei dissecting the rise of authoritarianism, to Alex Capri on techno-nationalism and the global economy. Hear firsthand stories from Rushan Abbas on Uyghur freedom, Shibani Mahtani and Timothy McLaughlin on Hong Kong’s democracy movement, and Masutomo Takehiro on Chinese migrants seeking new lives in Japan. Each talk uncovers the tension between individual agency and social structure, inviting you to consider what it means to choose, to act, and to speak in a rapidly changing world.

Minxin Pei

Techno-Nationalism: How It's Reshaping Trade, Geopolitics and Society

The world is not deglobalizing—it is reorganising around U.S.-China great power rivalry. At the heart of this competition are 12 strategic ‘power-multiplier’ technologies, beginning with the ‘AI-semiconductor nexus’, which is the ground zero of all other twenty first century industries, from biotech and genomics to data centies, quantum key communications and intelligent robots.

This reflects ‘techno-nationalism:’ when nations link indigenous technological prowess to national security, economic strength and social stability. Techno-nationalist thinking has resulted in the widespread weaponization of supply chains, data flows and even restrictions on the movement of human capital. What follows is supply chain decoupling and reshoring, a resurgence of industrial policy and a new kind of ‘tech-diplomacy and statecraft between governments and large tech companies. In this compelling book-talk, author Alex Capri will discuss how all of this is fundamentally reorganising our world.

About the Speakers

Alex Capri began his professional career as an international trade specialist with the U.S. Treasury Department and went on to become the regional leader and partner-in-charge of KPMG’s Asia Trade and Customs practice. Based in Asia for over 20 years, he now teaches in the Business School at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and in the NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He is the author of the best-selling book, Techno-Nationalism: How it's Reshaping Trade, Geopolitics and Society (Wiley). His extensive writings and insights have appeared in dozens of international publications including The Economist, the Financial Times and Forbes. Alex advises multinational businesses and government on strategy and risk management regarding trade, geopolitics and geoeconomics.
