May JF Salon Announcement
In May 2025, JF Salon will present seven thought-provoking events, spanning Jewish migration histories in China, early Chinese political thought, the judicial transformation under Xi Jinping, China's historical cycles of rise and decline, personal stories of migration and language loss, and modern rural escapism. We are honored to welcome leading scholars, writers, and historians who will guide us through rich dialogues on identity, governance, memory, and change.
在2025年5月,我們將舉辦七場精彩的季風人文講壇活動,主題涵蓋猶太人在中國的遷徙歷史、早期中國政治思想、習近平時期司法體制變革、中國歷史興衰的週期、個人的遷徙與語言流失故事,以及現代鄉村出走記。我們誠摯邀請著名學者、作家與歷史學家,與讀者共同探討身份、治理、記憶與變革的意義。
Jean Hoffmann Lewanda (Author & Researcher) — "Two Worlds, Two Stories: Exploring the Jewish Experience in Harbin and Shanghai"

Jean Hoffmann Lewanda will share insights from her family’s journey, exploring the rich Jewish histories in Harbin and Shanghai—places of refuge for Russian and European Jews in the 20th century. She brings personal narratives and historical research together to illuminate how China became a sanctuary during times of global upheaval.
About Speaker: Jean Hoffmann Lewanda
Born in New York City, Jean is the daughter of Jewish refugees who lived in China. She is the author of Witness to History and Shalama: My 96 Seasons in China, and is active in Holocaust education and research on Jews in China.

Dr. Bao will reevaluate the political theories developed during China's Axial Age, focusing on how Confucianism, Legalism, and Daoism responded to the political crises of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. He argues for usi ng modern social science methods to reassess ancient Chinese political thought.

In the 2019 Sundance U.S. Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary One Child Nation, Chinese-born filmmakers Nanfu Wang (Hooligan Sparrow) and Jialing Zhang expose the devastating consequences of China's One-Child Policy through the stories of those who lived through it.
For more than 35 years, China enforced a radical experiment in population control, restricting couples to a single child and imposing harsh penalties on those who violated the policy. A stunning, nuanced indictment of a program that prioritized a national agenda over human life, the film is a unique combination of personal and investigative filmmaking.
