五月的季風書園，延續對中國政治經濟、歷史記憶、文學與國際關係的關注。從黃亞生對中國經濟增長敘事的重新檢視，到胡平對文革群眾動員的反思；從猶太人在上海與中國的歷史，到美西戰爭、自由主義思想、中國北韓關係與跨國家族記憶，本月的講座將帶領讀者在不同時空之間穿行，重新理解思想、制度與個體生命如何彼此交織。
In May, JF Books continues its conversations on political economy, historical memory, literature, and international relations. From Yasheng Huang’s reassessment of China’s economic growth, to Hu Ping’s reflections on mass participation during the Cultural Revolution; from Jewish histories in Shanghai to America’s imperial wars, Chinese liberalism, China–North Korea relations, and family memory across vanished worlds, this month’s programs invite readers to think across history, ideas, and lived experience.

Yasheng Huang: Statism with Chinese Characteristics
通過深入分析80年代的鄉鎮企業的「民營屬性」、早期金融改革，以及那一階段相對開放的政治環境，並透過觀察家庭收入與GDP增長的分離，黃亞生挑戰了一種很流行的看法——即中國的成功來自於一種「政府干預＋威權治理」的獨特組合。他的核心觀點非常簡單：推動中國普惠性質的增長的是民間創業活力和一步步推進的金融制度放開，而不是大規模基建投入、國家主導的金融體系，或者所謂「精英化的威權體制」。黃亞生直接對一些關於中國經濟的常見敘述提出了質疑，尤其是對1980年代到1990年代政策轉向的理解，以及「基建是增長關鍵驅動力」的說法。
In this talk, Yasheng Huang revisits China’s economic transformation by focusing on township and village enterprises, early financial reforms, and the relatively open political environment of the 1980s. He challenges the view that China’s success came primarily from state intervention and authoritarian governance, arguing instead that private entrepreneurship and gradual financial liberalization were central to inclusive growth.
About the Speaker
黃亞生（Yasheng Huang）是麻省理工學院斯隆管理學院全球經濟與管理學Epoch基金會教授。他曾執教於密歇根大學和哈佛商學院，擁有哈佛大學博士學位。著作包括《有中國特色的資本主義：企業與國家》（经济学人2008年最佳图书），《改革年代的外國投資》《中國模式的終點：從科舉帝制到數位威權，揭露中國式治理制度的宿命》（外交事务2023年最佳图书）和2026年新书《有中国特色的国家主义》等。
Moderator 冷寧（Ning Leng）是Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy的助理教授。她的研究領域包括中國的政治經濟、威權政治、審查制度、政商關係以及中國的全球影響力。她同時是2025–2026年度Wilson China Fellowship研究員。

Hu Ping examines the Cultural Revolution as a political movement marked by enormous mass participation. Rather than treating it only as a top-down campaign, this talk asks why so many ordinary people—especially young people—became passionately involved, and how later experiences of exclusion and disillusionment shaped reflections on the movement.
About the Speaker
胡平，生于北京，长于四川，现居美国纽约。1966年高中毕业，文革时在自办小报转载遇罗克文章；1969年下乡于攀枝花市郊区；1973年返回成都。1978年考取北大西方哲学史研究生，获哲学硕士学位。1979年民主墙运动中在民间刊物《沃土》上发表长文《论言论自由》，被誉为“当代中国人权宣言”。1980年在北大参加竞选，当选为北京大学海淀区人大代表。1987年赴美。曾任中国民联主席（1988–1991），先后主持《中国之春》与《北京之春》杂志。现为《北京之春》荣誉主编、中国人权执行理事、独立中文笔会荣誉理事、中国民主转型研究所名誉所长。

The Lost Torah of Shanghai
A Novel Set in the Lost World of Jews in China
The Lost Torah of Shanghai juxtaposes the fictional disappearance of a historic sacred scroll with narrative about the “streams” of Jewish settlement in China—the Baghdadi Sephardim, the Russians, and the European refugees from the Nazis, as well as the so-called “real” Jews of China, who lived in Kaifeng. Linda will discuss the significance of this little-known history and, as the book does, set it in the context of characters encountering the sometimes dangerous challenge of searching for the Torah in 1990s China.
Linda Frank 的小說《The Lost Torah of Shanghai》以一卷失落的神聖經卷為線索，帶出猶太人在中國的多重歷史：來自巴格達的塞法迪猶太人、俄羅斯猶太人、逃離納粹的歐洲難民，以及開封猶太人的故事。這場講座將討論這段少為人知的歷史，並透過小說中的尋找與冒險，呈現1990年代中國背景下記憶、身份與歷史追索的複雜性。
About the Speaker
Linda Frank’s interest in 20th century world and Jewish history has inspired her storytelling and the creation of the “Jewish Miss Marple” series of three novels, of which The Lost Torah of Shanghai is the second. Retired from a business career in financial services, Linda complements her writing life with volunteerism and travel, especially to visit her son and his family in Beijing. Linda and her husband moved to Washington in late 2024 after residing in California, Colorado, and her native Wisconsin. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s from the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism.

Liberators or Occupiers: Rethinking America’s First “Good War”
The Spanish-American War dwells in the American imagination as a righteous myth of conquest and liberation. But how did the promise of freedom turn into betrayal? While Cuba fostered a vision of Americans as emancipators, the Philippine equivalent left a wasteland of famine and disease. How did this change not only the nations involved, but the individuals caught in the struggle? As T.E. Lawrence wrote: "By our own act, we were drained of morality, of volition, of responsibility, like dead leaves in the wind."
Joe Jackson 將重新審視美西戰爭這場被美國記憶塑造成「正義戰爭」的歷史事件。講座將討論「解放」如何可能轉化為「佔領」，以及美國在古巴與菲律賓的不同經驗如何改變了國家命運，也改變了身處其中的個體生命。
About the Speaker
Joe Jackson is the author of eight previous books, including The Thief at the End of the World: Rubber, Power, and the Seeds of Empire, one of Time’s Top Ten Books of 2008, and Atlantic Fever: Lindbergh, His Competitors, and the Race to Cross the Atlantic. His last book, Black Elk: The Life of an American Visionary, won the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography, the Society of American Historians’ Francis Parkman Prize, and the Western Writers of America’s Spur Award and was named the best biography of 2016 by True West magazine. A former investigative journalist, he holds an MFA from the University of Arkansas and lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Feng Chongyi approaches modern Chinese political disasters through both intellectual and institutional history. The talk traces a causal chain from the introduction of Marxism-Leninism to the formation of the totalitarian party-state system and its consequences in China, while also examining divisions within contemporary Chinese liberalism under existing political conditions.
About the Speaker
馮崇義曾就讀於中山大學、南開大學和利茲大學，是中華人民共和國第一位中國現代史博士。曾任教於中山大學和南開大學，現任教於悉尼科技大學。主要研究領域是近現代中國思想文化史和當代中國政治。近年來主要研究中國憲政民主轉型，特別是中國自由主義思想和中共黨內民主派。

When Ian Gill first visited Hong Kong, it took an unexpected turn when he uncovered an extraordinary journey of his mother: from a controversial adoption in Changsha and fame as a radio broadcaster in Shanghai, to a tragic romance in a Japanese internment camp and a royal decoration by Queen Elizabeth II. The backdrop for this fascinating family story is China’s turbulent century from the Anglo-Chinese wars of the 1840s to the advent of communism.

About the Speaker
Ian Gill was conceived in a Japanese prison camp in Hong Kong in 1945 and born in New Zealand after liberation. With his mother, he spent his early life in England, China and Bangkok. He worked as a journalist in the Asia-Pacific region for 14 years.
Understanding China–North Korean Relations: A Historical Perspective
Cold War Comrades demonstrates how Sino-North Korean friendship ultimately helped both states to survive a very tenuous period in their histories. Professor Gregg Brazinsky will explore Sino-North Korean relations during the early Cold War. He will show the surprising role that emotions played in this relationship. The Korean War and the Sino-North Korean alliance helped to foster stronger emotional attachment to the state and strengthen belief in socialist internationalism in both countries.

About the Speaker
Gregg A. Brazinsky is Professor of History and International Affairs and director of the Asian Studies Program at The George Washington University. He is the author of Nation Building in South Korea: Koreans, Americans, and the Making of a Democracy and Winning the Third World: Sino-American Rivalry during the Cold War.
