七月的季風書園，將以四場講座展開關於記憶、移民、民主、重建人生與跨文化藝術的對話。從海峽兩岸分隔家庭的記憶，到華裔移民社群在美國地方政治中的參與；從身份、語言與歸屬，到移民在新土地上面對的金錢壓力與生活重建，再到台灣竹笛、鼻笛音樂如何在即興中跨越族群與文化邊界，本月活動邀請作家、學者、公共人物與音樂家，共同討論個人生命與藝術如何穿越歷史、政治、制度與文化的變動。
In July, JF Books presents four conversations, three in English and one in Mandarin, on memory, migration, democracy, rebuilding life across borders, and cross-cultural artistry. From two sisters separated by the Taiwan Strait, to the political awakening of a Chinese American immigrant community, to the financial and emotional challenges of starting over in a new land, to the improvisational dialogue of Taiwanese bamboo flute and nose flute across ethnic and cultural boundaries, this month's programs explore how personal lives and personal art are shaped by history, politics, language, money, and belonging.

A House Across the Strait: Two Sisters and a Divided Memory
Book: Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden
In conversation with historian Tobie Meyer-Fong, Zhuqing Li discusses Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden, the true story of two sisters separated by China’s Civil War. One remained in Fuzhou; the other was stranded across the Taiwan Strait. At the center of their divided lives stood a family home, remembered by one sister as an anchor and by the other as danger. Together, they ask how war, revolution, and political division reshape memory, kinship, language, silence, and ambition.
本場講座將圍繞 Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden 展開。Zhuqing Li 將與歷史學者 Tobie Meyer-Fong 對談，講述兩位因中國內戰而分隔海峽兩岸的姊妹，以及一座家宅如何在不同記憶中成為依靠、危險與失落的象徵。透過家庭史，講座將討論戰爭、革命與政治分裂如何改變親情、語言、沉默與個人的生命選擇。
About the Speaker
Zhuqing Li is the author of Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden, a family history of two sisters separated by China’s Civil War. She is Head of Library Exploration and Research for East Asia at Brown University Library and Visiting Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Brown. Trained in Chinese linguistics and literature, she writes on language, memory, history, and belonging.
Moderator
Tobie Meyer-Fong is professor of history at Johns Hopkins University. Her research and writing emphasize the intimate and emotional effects of large-scale events at the individual and communal level. She is the author of two books, Building Culture in Early Qing Yangzhou and What Remains: Coming to Terms with Civil War in 19th-Century China.

Maryland State Delegate Lily Qi discusses her new memoir, Elected American: From Red China to Blue Maryland. As the only U.S. state legislator who lived through China's Cultural Revolution, Delegate Qi offers a rare perspective on citizenship, democracy, and immigrant integration. From combating WeChat disinformation to mobilizing immigrant voters, Qi tells the story of a Chinese American community's political transformation and the power of participation.
本場講座將邀請馬里蘭州眾議員 Lily Qi 分享其新書 Elected American: From Red China to Blue Maryland。作為少數親歷中國文革、並在美國地方政治中當選公職的華裔政治人物，Lily Qi 將從自身經歷出發，討論公民身份、民主參與、移民融合，以及華裔社群如何面對微信假資訊、動員選民並逐漸進入美國政治生活。
About the Speaker
Lily Qi has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 2019, representing Montgomery County. As a champion for economic competitiveness and cultural competency, Delegate Qi is a leading voice on immigrant integration, civic and political engagement, and the Asian American experience.
Moderator
Janelle Wong received her PhD from the Department of Political Science at Yale University. She is a Professor in the Departments of American Studies and Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, where she directs the Asian American Studies Program. Her research focus is on Asian American politics.

Join economist, poet, former financial advisor, and author Dr. Gulnaz Abdukadir for an engaging conversation inspired by her newest book, Who Took My Wallet? — Through the Maze to Financial Freedom in a New Land. Drawing from lived experience, professional insight, and storytelling, Dr. Abdukadir explores the hidden financial struggles many people face when starting over in a new place—and the resilience, mindset, and courage needed to rebuild stability, purpose, and hope.
當一個人在新的土地上重新開始，努力工作是否就足夠？本場講座將邀請經濟學者、詩人、前財務顧問與作家 Dr. Gulnaz Abdukadir，分享其新書 Who Took My Wallet? 所提出的問題：移民與新來者在重建生活時，常常面對哪些不易被看見的財務壓力？又需要怎樣的韌性、心態與勇氣，才能重新建立穩定、目標與希望？
About the Speaker
Dr. Gulnaz Abdukadir is an economist, poet, former financial advisor, and author of four books exploring resilience, identity, money, and human experience. After earning advanced degrees in economics and finance, working over a decade at the World Bank and more than two decades in financial institutions, she now blends storytelling with practical wisdom to help readers navigate uncertainty and change.
島嶼之聲：台灣竹笛、鼻笛與跨文化音樂的旅程
The flute holds a long history in Chinese culture and stands as an important cultural symbol. In Taiwan, through the interaction of diverse ethnic groups, it has developed into a rich and colorful expression ranging from tradition to the contemporary. In this event, the speaker will share how he uses improvisation as a new musical language—allowing the sound of the flute to engage in dialogue with different cultures. The session will be interwoven with live performance demonstrations. Through this sharing, participants will experience the diversity and vitality of flute music, and feel how, while preserving its history, flute music also carries the possibility of opening new futures.
竹笛在中華文化中擁有悠久的歷史，也是重要的文化象徵之一。在臺灣，多元族群文化的交流與融合，孕育出豐富多樣的竹笛音樂樣貌。本次分享將介紹臺灣竹笛、排灣族鼻笛及口簧琴等傳統樂器，並透過現場示範，分享如何以即興作為音樂語言，讓笛樂與不同文化展開對話，分享音樂在承載文化傳統的同時，成為跨越文化、連結人與人的橋樑。
About the Speaker
林小楓為臺灣長笛即興演奏家、策展人，現任臺北「林氏文化」音樂總監。他致力於串連不同文化的長笛傳統、自由即興與實驗聲響，透過跨文化合作，拓展當代長笛演奏的表現可能性。2024年，他憑藉專輯《CADENZA 21'》榮獲世界長笛協會（World Flute Society）頒發「年度世界長笛演奏家（World Flutist of the Year）」殊榮，並受邀參與巴黎文化奧運（Paris Cultural Olympiad）演出。他的足跡遍及歐洲、美國及亞洲各地，透過即興創作與多元文化的長笛傳統，促進跨文化藝術交流與對話。
Moderator
張璿為製作人、多媒體藝術家，以及美國印第安納大學雅各布音樂學院（Indiana University Jacobs School of Music）兼任教師，教授大鍵琴、古鋼琴及十七、十八世紀即興演奏。她與長笛演奏家林小楓共同組成的演出團隊所推出的專輯《CADENZA 21'》獲得國際高度肯定，包括入圍 2024年葛萊美獎（Grammy Awards）最佳唱片包裝獎（Best Recording Package），並於臺灣傳藝金曲獎獲得多項提名，包括最佳製作人獎、最佳編曲獎及最佳跨界音樂專輯獎。
