四月的季風書園，把目光投向「影像」與「記憶」。 從華南水域的歷史變遷，到個體身體經驗的紀錄；雞是如何跨越宗教儀式、貿易網絡與帝國擴張，串聯起東西方的文化與經濟；從地下歷史書寫，到被封存與被刪除的影像，本月的節目橫跨紀錄片、文學與歷史，試圖連接歷史與當下，我們依靠什麼來理解世界？
本月特別策劃的「中國民間檔案館紀錄片展映」，呈現1980至90年代中國新紀錄運動的珍稀影像。這些作品多數曾被禁止、未公開或極少流通，是對一段劇烈轉型時期最直接、最未經修飾的見證。

Metamorphosis of the Bay Area 《灣區變形記》
Based on four decades of fieldwork, Metamorphosis of the Bay Area traces the transformation of South China’s Pearl River Delta from a water-based society into a modern urban landscape. Through historical images and ethnographic storytelling, the film explores how local communities were reshaped by state power, land reform, and global economic forces. More than a regional history, it offers a profound reflection on how China entered modernity.
基於長達四十年的田野調查，《灣區變形記》以珠江三角洲為核心，講述一個關於水域社會如何逐步轉變為現代城市空間的歷史。從明清時期的水上生活，到當代高速城市化進程，影片以影像與人類學敘事交織，呈現出地方社會在國家與全球資本力量之間的重塑與掙扎。
這不僅是一部區域史紀錄，更是一個關於「如何成為現代」的中國故事。
About the Speaker
Helen F. Siu, a Professor of Anthropology and former chair of the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University. Her teaching interests are political and historical anthropology, urban and global culture change. She has conducted decades of fieldwork in Southern China, exploring agrarian change and commerce, the nature of the socialist state, and the refashioning of identities. Lately, she explores rural-urban interface in China, inter-Asian connections, China-Africa encounters, popular music and new political space in Hong Kong.
Helen F. Siu（蕭鳳霞），耶魯大學人類學教授，曾任東亞研究委員會主席。她長期從事華南地區田野研究，關注農業轉型、商業網絡、社會主義國家形態與身份重構等議題。近年研究延伸至中國的城鄉交界、跨亞洲連結、中非互動，以及香港的流行文化與新興政治空間。
Moderator Denise Y. Ho is a historian at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, where she teaches modern Chinese history. She is the author of Curating Revolution and the co-editor of Material Contradictions in Mao's China. She is currently completing a manuscript entitled The Nation's Gate: A Cross-Border History of Hong Kong and China.
喬治城大學外交學院歷史學者，研究現代中國歷史與文化政治。著有《Curating Revolution》，並合編《Material Contradictions in Mao's China》。目前正撰寫新書《The Nation’s Gate》，探討香港與中國之間的跨境歷史。

About the Speaker
Andrew Lawler is a journalist and author who has written about history, science, religion, and politics from dozens of countries. Andrew’s byline has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and many other publications. Andrew has won a number of journalism awards, and his work has appeared several times in The Best of Science and Nature Writing.

Black Box Diaries is a deeply personal documentary by Shiori Ito, who documents her own investigation into sexual assault. Filmed from a first-person perspective, the film captures her pursuit of justice amid intense public backlash. More than a personal story, it reflects on systems of silence—and the courage required to speak.

About the Speaker
Shiori Ito is an Oscar and BAFTA-nominated documentary filmmaker, journalist, and writer, and the co-founder of Hanashi Films, focusing on gender-based human rights issues, and was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2020.
Shiori Ito 是紀錄片導演、記者與作家，其作品聚焦性別與人權議題。她曾被《TIME》評為全球最具影響力人物之一。
China Unofficial Archives Documentary Screening

Structure. Wave. Youth. Cinema: Four Rare Documentaries Screening (1988–1994)
This special program, presented in collaboration with the China Unofficial Archives, features four landmark works from China’s New Documentary movement (1988–1994). Many of these films have rarely—or never—been publicly screened. Together, they offer an unfiltered portrait of a society in transition, capturing urban life, youth, environmental crisis, and historical rupture. These works are not only cinematic experiments, but vital historical records outside official narratives. Many of these films are being screened publicly for the first time. Together, they form a rare archive of China’s recent past—urgent, fragile, and deeply human.
季風書園與中國民間檔案館聯合呈現四部中國新紀錄運動的重要作品（1988–1994）。
這些影像誕生於一個劇烈動盪的歷史時刻，記錄了城市、青年、環境與國家之間的張力。它們既是影像實驗，也是歷史證詞——在官方敘事之外，保留了另一種觀看中國的方式。

《工讀生》（1991–1994）Reform School Students, a pioneering ecological film that failed to pass censorship review. 透過對「問題青年」教育機構的觀察，本片呈現制度與個體之間的複雜關係，也揭示了被忽略的社會邊緣群體。

《只有一個地球》 Only One Earth (1990), the avant-garde ecological essay film.
《我畢業了》I Have Graduated (1992) is a sensitive portrait of state-run institutions for delinquent and abandoned youth that was made for Beijing Television but never broadcast; and the original, extended cut of the independently produced, which features candid interviews with students from the last graduating class to leave Beijing campuses during the aftermath of June 4, 1989.
前者是早期環境紀錄影像的實驗性嘗試，後者則透過學生訪談，捕捉一代人在歷史斷裂中的迷惘與選擇。

Archiving China’s Grassroots Historians: The Battle for Memory in Xi's China
During the Cold War, public intellectuals in the Soviet bloc were household names in the West--Solzhenitsyn, Havel, Kundera, Forman. That isn't the case for Chinese writers and filmmakers today. Why? In his 2023 book Sparks: China's Underground Historians and Their Battle for the Future, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ian Johnson introduces us to some of these Chinese thinkers. That same year, he launched the China Underground Archives to make their works available in a systematic, non-partisan way for Chinese and non-Chinese audiences. In this talk, Johnson describes the writing of Sparks, why he launched the archive, and how it has morphed into a widely read publication with its own weekly newsletter.

About the Speaker
Ian Johnson is a Pulitzer Prize–winning writer and researcher based in Berlin. He is the founder of the China Unofficial Archives, a project dedicated to preserving underground writings, samizdat publications, and documentary materials banned or suppressed in China. His book Sparks: China’s Underground Historians and their Battle for the Future examines how independent historians challenge official narratives and keep alternative histories alive.

From a dystopian childhood haunted by memory, to migrant lives shaped by chance encounters, to artists confronting censorship and identity, The Memory Museum reveals a bold new voice with emotional depth and political imagination.
當一個人開始用非母語寫作，記憶是否仍然完整？還是會在語言轉換中發生變形與重組？《The Memory Museum》以細膩而富有想像力的敘事，描寫在移民經驗與文化錯位之中，個體如何重新理解自身與世界的關係。這場對談將圍繞第二語言寫作、文化翻譯與身份建構展開，討論語言如何同時成為限制與可能。在跨文化語境之中，我們如何書寫自身？又如何保存那些難以被翻譯的經驗與情感？
About the Speaker & Moderator
M Lin is a Chinese writer and translator based in the United States. Writing in English as her second language, her work explores migration, memory, and the politics of language. Her debut collection The Memory Museum has been widely recognized for its formal innovation and emotional depth.
Caiwei Chen 陳采薇 is an award-winning journalist and oral historian based in New York. She writes on technology, culture, and Chinese society, and currently works at MIT Technology Review. Her work often engages with questions of narrative, memory, and digital life.

KOREAN MESSIAH: Kim Il Sung and the Christian Roots of North Korea’s Personality Cult
Jonathan Cheng, The Wall Street Journal’s China bureau chief and former Korea bureau chief, as he discusses his latest book, KOREAN MESSIAH, a landmark history of North Korea, told through the rise of the Kim dynasty and its surprising ties to American Christianity. Drawing on letters, diaries, and never-before-unearthed archival material that temper and often contradict the glorious historical record promoted by Kim Il Sung’s legions of hagiographers, KOREAN MESSIAH tells the true story of a country shrouded in fictions. Barbara Demick, author of Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea, hails “Provocative and fascinating, KOREAN MESSIAH casts fresh light on North Korea.”

Shakespeare, Twain, and Orwell each created worlds that illuminate power, absurdity, and human nature. This conversation with Jeffrey Wasserstrom and Nan Z. Da explores how their works have been read and reinterpreted in China—by thinkers and ordinary readers alike—to make sense of politics, history, and lived experience. Drawing on their own research, the speakers will reflect on cross-cultural reading and intellectual exchange in a moment when such dialogue feels increasingly fragile.

About the Speakers
Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on modern Chinese history, social movements, and global intellectual exchange. He is the author of numerous influential books, including Vigil: Hong Kong on the Brink.
Nan Z. Da is Associate Professor of English at Johns Hopkins University. A scholar of comparative literature and critical theory, her work explores Sino-U.S. literary encounters and the intersections of aesthetics, politics, and history. Her recent book The Chinese Tragedy of King Lear examines Maoism through Shakespearean analysis.
