JF Salon Announcement of August
八月的季風人文講壇，把書寫、舞蹈、記憶與歷史交錯編織成一張思想與情感的網。我們邀請小說家、舞者、學者與記者，從身體與語言、記憶與權力的邊界出發，講述他們如何在文化夾縫中找尋方向。從顧艷與解芳描繪的她者之聲，到來自中亞與美國舞台的跨文化編舞；從戰亂中的女性記憶書寫，到資本權力背後的敘事結構；再到莎士比亞與毛時代的意外對話——這五場對話，不是單純的學術活動，而是一次次集體的回望與自我追問。
我們關心的，不只是文學或歷史，而是當人處在語言變異、權力轉移、身份流動的時代縫隙中，是否仍能創造理解、共鳴與新的連結。我們期待你來，不只是聆聽，而是加入這些尚未完成的對話。
In August 2025, JF Salon continues its inquiry into memory, identity, and cultural collision with five extraordinary conversations across literature, dance, journalism, and diaspora. This month, we hear from award-winning novelists, choreographers, and investigative reporters, as they reimagine home, reframe history, and reckon with power. From feminine narratives in migration to the choreography of international relations, each event offers a unique lens into the worlds we live and inherit.
顧艷 & 解芳：「她們的故事」- 異質文化語境下的女性書寫

當女性以書寫回應漂泊與記憶，「她們」的故事便穿越語言與文化的藩籬，建構自我與集體的空間。顧艷與解芳將分享她們的編輯與創作歷程，並邀請讀者走進海外華語女性書寫的內在世界。

About the Speakers
顧艷是中國知名作家，九〇年代女性主義寫作的代表之一。著有小說、散文等三十餘部，聚焦於女性經驗、城市記憶與移民身份。現任北美作家協會學術部主任，積極推動海外華文文學的出版與對話。
Gu Yan is an acclaimed Chinese author and a prominent voice in 1990s feminist literature. With over 30 published works, her writing explores womanhood, migration, and urban life. She currently serves as the Director of the Academic Division at the North American Chinese Writers’ Association.
解芳是斯坦福大學東亞系博士，現任美國維吉尼亞軍事學院副教授。她的研究橫跨傳統戲劇、當代表演與華語文學，並活躍於中英學術出版，致力於建構跨文化女性敘事的理論與實踐。
Xie Fang holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Stanford University and is currently an Associate Professor at the Virginia Military Institute. Her work spans traditional drama, Chinese-language literature, and performance studies, with a focus on diasporic women’s narratives and transnational literary practices.

Join two acclaimed figures in the world of dance as they reflect on choreography as cultural dialogue. From Central Asia to Washington D.C., their books trace how movement articulates identity, politics, and transnational memory.

About the Speakers
Laurel Victoria Gray is a celebrated choreographer, performer, and costume designer with expertise in Silk Road dance traditions. With academic roots in history and decades of field research, her work bridges cultural preservation and embodied storytelling. She received Uzbekistan’s Friendship of the Peoples medal in 2021 for her contributions to cultural diplomacy.
Dana Tai Soon Burgess is one of America’s leading choreographers and the founding artistic director of Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company. Known as the “Diplomat of Dance,” his career intertwines performance, diplomacy, and identity. His company, now in its 32nd season, performs nationally and internationally, often in collaboration with U.S. embassies and museums.
Qin Sun Stubis: Once Our Lives – Life, Death and Love in the Middle Kingdom

Author Qin Sun Stubis recounts four generations of Chinese women surviving war and superstition. Her memoir, lauded across global media, is a tribute to resilience and remembrance.

About the Speaker
Qin Sun Stubis is a Chinese American author, poet, and columnist. Born in a Shanghai shantytown, she overcame personal and political adversity to become a widely published writer. Her memoir Once Our Lives was honored with the Nellie Bly Award for Journalistic Nonfiction and praised for its lyrical depiction of family, fate, and historical memory across modern China.
Evan Osnos with Edward Wong: Gilded Ages in the U.S. and China

How do the ultrarich reshape two empires? Evan Osnos and Edward Wong discuss inequality, political mythology, and the self-image of elites in China and the U.S.—past and present.

About the Speakers
Evan Osnos is a National Book Award-winning writer and staff journalist at The New Yorker. His work covers U.S. and international politics, China, and elite power structures. He is the author of Age of Ambition and The Haves and the Have-Yachts, and co-hosts The New Yorker Political Scene podcast.
Edward Wong is a veteran diplomatic correspondent for The New York Times. A seasoned foreign correspondent with over a decade in China and Iraq, he brings deep insight into global affairs, U.S.-China relations, and the personal costs of geopolitics.
Nan Z. Da: The Chinese Tragedy of King Lear

Scholar and writer Nan Z. Da reads King Lear through the lens of Maoism, family trauma, and classical Chinese aesthetics—from Peking Opera to Confucian morality.

About the Speaker
Nan Z. Da is Associate Professor of English at Johns Hopkins University. A scholar of comparative literature and critical theory, her work reconsiders Sino-U.S. literary encounters, reading across disciplines and languages. Her latest book, The Chinese Tragedy of King Lear, weaves memoir with Shakespearean analysis to examine Maoism, memory, and classical aesthetics.
