The 1967 riots were a watershed in Hong Kong's post-war history. This book analyzes the causes, process, and impact of the riots, detailing the fuse and main events of the unrest, including the Sha Tau Kok border conflict, the bomb scare, and the burning of the British Chargé d'affaires office in Beijing. Based on recently declassified British government archives, this book reveals the British government's strategies in dealing with the unrest and Sino-British relations at the time. The author interviewed many individuals involved from both the Hong Kong British government and the pro-Beijing camp, including David Trench's private secretary David Kidd, who was responsible for suppressing the riots, Liang Shangyuan, Deputy Director of the Xinhua News Agency Hong Kong Branch, Jasper Tsang, who is currently the President of the Legislative Council, and Tsang Tak-sing, the Secretary for Home Affairs. The author also recounts the experiences of many participants who responded to the pro-Beijing camp's call to participate in the anti-British struggle and paid a heavy price. As some of the interviewees have since passed away, these valuable interview records provide indispensable oral historical materials for this period of history.
