九月的季風人文講壇，從歷史的重探走向當下的政治現實：香港新世紀出版社創辦人鮑樸連續兩晚以英文與中文重訪文化大革命，追問這場運動的起源、規模與未竟的遺產；資深中國觀察家 Orville Schell 以新書《Inside China's Secret Prisons》揭開中國龐大刑罰體系與強迫勞動的歷史脈絡；美國企業研究所高級研究員 Audrye Wong 剖析中國經濟治術中被低估的一面——正向誘因，以及她關於政治干預與僑務治術的最新研究；作家 Kit Fan 與譯者 Jeremy Tiang 則從飲食與家族出發，談香港、倫敦、中國與台灣之間的離散、記憶與身份。九月下旬，2026 華語獨立影像展「島嶼之間，聲情浮現」在季風展開；月末，賓夕法尼亞大學「中美關係未來項目」的四位研究員在川習會前夕齊聚華盛頓，就國家安全、貿易、能源、人權與教育交流展開現場預判。
This September, JF Salon moves from the reexamination of history to the politics of the present. Bao Pu returns for two consecutive evenings — one in English, one in Chinese — to revisit the Cultural Revolution and its unresolved legacy. Orville Schell opens up China's vast penal system and its traditions of political imprisonment and forced labor. Audrye Wong examines the underemphasized role of positive inducements in China's economic statecraft. Kit Fan and Jeremy Tiang trace family, food, and identity across Hong Kong, London, China, and Taiwan. Late in the month, the 2026 Sinophone Independent Film Festival comes to JF Books, and four fellows of the Penn Project on the Future of U.S.–China Relations gather in Washington on the eve of the Trump–Xi summit.

The Mysteries of the Cultural Revolution
Nearly fifty years after its end, the Cultural Revolution remains one of the most contested and least understood episodes in modern Chinese history. Was it merely a disastrous deviation from China's path to modernization, or did it leave a far deeper imprint on the making of contemporary China? Why did it happen, and from Mao Zedong's own perspective, did it truly fail — or did it succeed in ways that continue to shape China's political culture and historical memory? Revisiting this turbulent decade, Bao Pu explores why the Cultural Revolution still matters today, not only for understanding China's past, but also for understanding China itself.
When The Cambridge History of the People's Republic of China was first published in 1987, the American sinologist John K. Fairbank observed that Western terms such as "nationalism" and "nation-state," when applied to China, can only mislead us. China, he argued, cannot be understood by simply transferring Western concepts onto it: it is a different animal, and its politics must be understood from within, genetically. What did Fairbank mean? What kind of "different animal" is the People's Republic of China, and how can English-language readers understand it from within? Nearly forty years later, these questions remain unresolved, even as the problem of understanding modern China has become increasingly urgent in international affairs.
Over the past twenty years, New Century Press has published dozens of works on the history of the Cultural Revolution, including the Chinese edition of Roderick MacFarquhar's The Origins of the Cultural Revolution, a recent chronological series on the period, and studies of key figures such as Kang Sheng, Chen Boda, and Jiang Qing.

Bao Pu 鮑樸 is the founder of New Century Press, an independent Hong Kong publishing house focused on modern Chinese history.
本場英文講座中，香港新世紀出版社創辦人鮑樸將重返文革這一中國近現代史上最具爭議、也最少被真正理解的十年。文革究竟只是現代化道路上的一次災難性偏離，還是在更深處塑造了今日的中國？它為何發生？從毛澤東自身的角度看，它究竟失敗了，還是以某種方式成功了？講者亦將回應費正清所謂中國是「另一種動物」、其政治須「從內部理解」的說法，探討英語世界該如何真正走進這段歷史。

從定論到問題：重讀文化大革命的歷史線索
半個世紀過去，文化大革命並未真正成為歷史。持續出現的材料，正在為一些關鍵問題提供新的線索：文革的歷史起源究竟是什麼？「內亂」何以發展為史無前例的社會動員？如何理解林彪事件？文革究竟終結了什麼，又留下了什麼？
「文化大革命」無疑是中國近現代史上最具震撼力的重大事件之一。半個世紀以來，人們對文革的認識已逐漸轉變，政治定論不再遵循單一敘事框架，這段歷史本身也逐漸轉變為一個有待持續研究、辨析與重新理解的對象。進入二十一世紀以後，海內外關於文革的中文出版物，無論數量還是話題之廣泛，都前所未有地擴展；現代化史觀、社會史、文化史、情感史等不同研究路徑相互碰撞，也相互補充。
鮑樸將結合二十餘年來文革出版物的整理與出版經驗，梳理這些材料如何改變人們理解文革的方式。當既有結論重新成為問題，文革或許不再只是個人的記憶與創傷，也能被放回中國歷史的大脈絡中重新解讀，最終進入「通古今之變」的思想視野。
講者簡介
鮑樸，香港新世紀出版社創辦人。該社是一家關注中國近現代史的獨立出版社。
In this Chinese-language talk, Bao Pu — founder of Hong Kong's New Century Press — argues that half a century on, the Cultural Revolution has not yet truly become history. Drawing on more than twenty years of editing and publishing materials on the period, he traces how newly surfaced sources, memoirs, and scholarship have steadily changed the way the public understands it. What were the historical origins of the Cultural Revolution? How did "internal turmoil" grow into social mobilization on an unprecedented scale? How should the Lin Biao incident be understood? What did the movement end, and what did it leave behind? As settled verdicts become open questions again, the Cultural Revolution may cease to be only personal memory and trauma, and can be read back into the longer arc of Chinese history.

Inside China's Secret Prisons: An Undercover Exposé and Its Lasting Legacy
As US–China relations continue to be roiled by a growing number of global challenges, one of the most intractable sources of discord emanates from our different political systems. The manifold contradictions between democracy and authoritarianism are now playing themselves out in trade disputes, diplomatic crises, and military tensions with ever more dangerous potential consequences. One of the most antagonistic issues dividing the US and China centers around the question of political imprisonment and the export of goods made with "forced labor" that China has for decades been covertly and illegally feeding into the global marketplace.
Join veteran China-watcher Orville Schell in a discussion of his new book Inside China's Secret Prisons: An Undercover Exposé and Its Lasting Legacy, which not only delves into China's vast penal system, but explores how its traditions of political imprisonment and forced labor have damaged several generations of Chinese and led to a form of techno-autocracy that makes meaningful re-engagement with the US ever more difficult.
About the Speaker
Orville Schell is one of America's foremost experts on China, an award-winning journalist, author, and longtime China analyst. He has written extensively about modern China and has reported on the country for decades, including his groundbreaking and Emmy Award-winning investigative work for CBS News's 60 Minutes.

China's Economic Statecraft and Diaspora Statecraft
Even as the Chinese government intensifies supply-chain coercion, it deepens the trade and investment linkages that sustain its global economic centrality. In Subversion and Seduction, Audrye Wong explores an underemphasized aspect of China's economic influence: positive inducements, examining how and when different strategies achieve Beijing's foreign policy goals. Understanding China's economic statecraft is critical as Beijing wields economic clout geopolitically. Dr. Wong will also preview research on political interference and diaspora statecraft.
About the Speaker
Audrye Wong is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. She is the author of Subversion and Seduction: China's Economic Statecraft, and is working on a second book on China's foreign influence activities and diaspora statecraft. Her writing has appeared in popular press and academic journals, such as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and Foreign Affairs. She holds a PhD and AB from Princeton University.

「島嶼之間，聲情浮現」 Between Islands, Voices Emerge As JF Books marks its second anniversary in Washington, DC, we are pleased to present the 2026 Sinophone Independent Film Festival, taking place September 19–26, 2026 in Washington, DC. This year’s festival, themed “Between Islands, Voices Emerge” brings together more than ten independent films from Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Costa Rica, and Sinophone diaspora communities. Through documentary and fiction, the films explore displacement, migration, labor, family, gender, political pressure, memory, and the search for belonging—tracing the diverse experiences and voices that shape contemporary Sinophone communities across borders, generations, and islands. Food, Connection, and Identity: Cooking Across Hong Kong, London, China, and Taiwan
Writers Kit Fan and Jeremy Tiang explore family connection, heritage, identity, and cooking across Hong Kong and London, China and Taiwan. In Kit Fan's novel Goodbye Chinatown, Michelin-starred chef Amber grapples with home and family across London, Shanghai, and Hong Kong in a vibrant tale of migration, politics, and food that also offers a cautionary message for Taiwan. Jeremy Tiang's upcoming translation of Ping Lu's To the East of the East explores cross-strait relations in a layered literary thriller by one of Taiwan's most influential contemporary authors.
About the Speaker
Kit Fan is an award-winning UK-based novelist, poet, and critic from Hong Kong. He is the author of two novels, Diamond Hill and Goodbye Chinatown. His poetry collections have been shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot and Forward Prizes, and his honors include the Northern Writers Awards and the Times/Stephen Spender Poetry Translation Prize.
About the Moderator
Jeremy Tiang won the Singapore Literature Prize for his novel State of Emergency and was shortlisted for the same prize for his short story collection It Never Rains on National Day. He has translated over thirty books from Chinese.

Live from Washington: Forecasting the Trump–Xi Summit
The evening before the Trump–Xi summit in Washington, four fellows of the Penn Project on the Future of U.S.–China Relations will share their expectations for the summit, alongside general observations about the present moment in U.S.–China relations, with special attention to issues of national security, trade, energy, human rights, and educational exchange.
Panelists
Cory Combs directs climate, energy, and critical mineral supply chain research at Trivium China and is a member of the Penn Project's climate and environment thematic group.
Aaron Glasserman is a historian of China who focuses on ethnic politics, Islam in China, and China's relationship with the Middle East. He is a member of the national security thematic group.
Bochen Han is a journalist and researcher focused on U.S.–China relations. From 2022 to 2026, she was a Washington-based correspondent for the South China Morning Post, and is currently a member of the research and education thematic group.
Yaqiu Wang is a human rights researcher and advocate specializing on China. She is currently a member of the human rights and governance thematic group.

Neysun A. Mahboubi is the Director of the Penn Project on the Future of U.S.–China Relations at the University of Pennsylvania.
