This book examines Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Soviet Union, and Mao's China, analyzing how these three regimes manufactured imminent critical situations, subsequently used their political ideologies to define people's identities, and then used these identities as criteria for dispensing rewards or inflicting persecution. In an era where people had no control over their own identities, they were unable to adapt to the imposed identities. At the same time, to survive or avoid misfortune, they often had to engage in inconsistent words and actions, ultimately falling into an identity crisis.

This book, along with "Humanity Under Totalitarianism: Concentration Camp Literature and Dystopian Literature" and "Everyday Life Under Totalitarianism: Witnesses' Memories and Records," forms a trilogy. Each book analyzes, from a unique perspective, how totalitarianism distorts human nature, subverts values, and blurs the lines between good and evil, turning people into zombies in personality, slaves in spirit, numb in morality, blindly obedient in thought, and ignorant in politics, ultimately becoming a cog or screw in the state machinery.
