In early 2017, the main axis of the Kuroshio Current, which flows northward along Taiwan's east coast, moved away from the Taitung coast, creating what fishermen called a "bitter current" where they couldn't catch fish. Three or four months later, the main axis of the Kuroshio Current returned to Taiwan's east coast, followed by a bumper harvest of dolphinfish in Xingang. The Kuroshio Current was an important route for ancient human migration in the North Pacific and is a crucial part of the global ocean current system. It flows along Taiwan's east coast, transporting large amounts of high-temperature, high-salinity seawater from low to mid-latitudes at a high speed of about 80 kilometers per day.
