In early 2017, the main axis of the Kuroshio Current, which flows northward along Taiwan's east coast, moved away from the Taitung coast, creating what fishermen called a "bitter current" where they couldn't catch fish. Three or four months later, the main axis of the Kuroshio Current returned to Taiwan's east coast, followed by a bumper harvest of dolphinfish in Xingang. The Kuroshio Current was an important route for ancient human migration in the North Pacific and is a crucial part of the global ocean current system. It flows along Taiwan's east coast, transporting large amounts of high-temperature, high-salinity seawater from low to mid-latitudes at a high speed of about 80 kilometers per day. It dominates the marine environment and climate along its path, profoundly affecting migration routes, cultural output, biological flow, and people's daily lives today. The Kuroshio Current can be said to be inextricably linked with Taiwan's environment, climate, and fisheries. The two authors of this book, from the perspectives of a scientist and a fisherman, respectively, take readers deep into cutting-edge research and the現場 of harpooning marlin, allowing them to see the true face of the ocean firsthand. For example, how is cutting-edge research produced? How do people spend a day working at sea? How are marlin and dolphinfish harpooned? The book is wonderfully realistic, full of hardship, fun, sadness, and challenges.
