察舉制度變遷史稿

This book takes as its research subject the seven to eight hundred years of evolution of the “Chaju” (recommendation) system of official selection, which originated in the Han Dynasty and eventually evolved into the imperial examination system in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. The book identifies three main driving forces constraining the evolution of the Chaju system: bureaucratic rational administration, the distribution of privileges and power struggles under the imperial political system, and the dynamics of the intellectual class as the source of imperial officials. Based on this, a large number of relevant historical materials were examined and organized. On this foundation, an in-depth analysis and insightful exposition were conducted on the forms of expression, interrelationships, and evolution of the factors of "selecting people based on virtue," "selecting people based on ability," "selecting people based on literary talent," "selecting people based on reputation," and "selecting people based on lineage" within the Chaju system. This provides a unique explanation for the genesis, development, and evolution of this system into the imperial examination system.
