Throughout the two years of interviews for this book, I focused my attention on my father's intellectual community and their footprints amidst the historical currents… Ch'u Hai-yuan and his companions stood at their own nodes, node after node, together buffeted by the tides of their era, making choices in the midst of the沖刷. They fought against authoritarianism in pursuit of freedom, yet also experienced trials of being misled by politics, by sentiment, by popularity, and by themselves. Their individual lives also reflect our present day. And everything is still in flux, but by seeing the past, what we see today gradually gains historical overlays, and new understandings can emerge from this.
