In the summer of 2019, Hongkongers launched the "Be Water Revolution" to protest the SAR government's proposed Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill, which would allow the extradition of criminal suspects in Hong Kong to mainland China for trial. The movement's name, "Be Water," comes from the famous saying of martial arts master Bruce Lee: "Be like water, formless and shapeless."

As a result, the "Be Water Revolution" became the largest political protest in Hong Kong's history. Not only that, but this movement also had a unique characteristic that distinguished it from other movements: participants communicated in real-time, and there was no central leadership throughout the entire process.

This book attempts to understand the rise of the "Be Water Revolution" and its lasting aftermath from the perspective of the activists, exploring why so many ordinary citizens participated in this dangerous and far-reaching protest, and how they formed and displayed such extraordinary agency.
