This book is a memoir by the renowned American novelist Lynne Tillman, who, with a calm and keen eye and unvarnished honesty, records her long years and complex emotional journey caring for her disabled mother. It tells the story of an abrupt reversal in their mother-daughter relationship and offers reflections on aging, family care, and death.
For eleven years, her once capable mother became unable to care for herself. Words like Alzheimer's, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, and dementia became central to Tillman's life. Providing hands-on care at home, adapting to her mother's emotional fluctuations, repeatedly going to hospitals and finding caregivers, and dealing with recurring emergencies became the erratic daily routine for her and her sisters. Although Tillman was not her mother's favorite, she still wanted to be a dutiful daughter and ensure her mother lived well. However, under the heavy burden, she could not avoid the exhaustion and resentment within her, as well as the conflict between responsibility and self.
Sharply honest and heartbreakingly real, this is the self-confession of an "imperfect daughter." Through a highly universal private narrative, Tillman offers resonance to all family caregivers and solace to every child.
