來源 (Provenance)

Provenance:

From the private collection of Dr. Albert Keidel, a prominent American development economist specializing in East Asia and a professor at George Washington University (GWU). The history of this volume (/series) is meticulously documented: it was acquired by Dr. Keidel in 1985 (Showa 60) during a personal visit to Isseido Booksellers (一誠堂書店), the historic and venerable authority on Sinology and rare antiquarian books located in Kanda Jinbocho, Tokyo. At the time of purchase, Dr. Keidel—having earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University—was conducting post-doctoral research at the Faculty of Economics, the University of Tokyo. This collection subsequently followed his academic and professional itinerary, traveling across Tokyo, Washington, D.C., Beijing, and various international think tanks, serving as a tangible testament to the cross-cultural exchange between Western Sinology and East Asian economic history in the late 20th century.

Published in 1985 by Kodansha International, Yoshitoshi: The Splendid Decadent remains the definitive monograph in English on Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), celebrated as the last great master of the traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock print. Written by the foremost authority Shinichi Segi and translated by Alfred Birnbaum, this beautifully produced volume bridges the gap in Western scholarship regarding Yoshitoshi's turbulent life and brilliant artistic maturity. The book features over sixty vibrant, full-page color plates and eighty black-and-white illustrations, spanning his infamous bloody prints ("Chimei Muban"), his dramatic warrior series , and his sublime late masterpieces like the Tales of Genji and One Hundred Aspects of the Moon.

Yoshitoshi lived through Japan’s chaotic transition from the feudal Edo period to the modernized Meiji era, a historical friction deeply reflected in his art. Dubbed "The Splendid Decadent," his work ranges from the intensely macabre to the exquisitely poetic. This 1985 edition by Kodansha was a monumental cultural bridge, introducing Western collectors and art historians to the psychological depth and technical mastery of an artist who pushed Ukiyo-e into the modern psychological realm. It traces his lineage from the Utagawa School, his struggles with mental illness, and his eventual triumph as a pioneer of modern Japanese illustration and printmaking.

Detail 1: The Curated Quote of Akutagawa Ryūnosuke

Let us, then, take a look at Yoshitoshi... Do we not see the dramatic spirit of that decadent age when night and day were rolled into one?"

At the top of the two-page spread, the editors insightfully curate a historical quote from the legendary writer Akutagawa Ryūnosuke: "Let us, then, take a look at Yoshitoshi... Do we not see the dramatic spirit of that decadent age when night and day were rolled into one?" This seamless intersection of Taisho literature and Meiji Ukiyo-e enhances both the scholarly depth and the poetic resonance of the volume.

Detail 2: Stylized Artist Seal Endpapers (致敬傳統的篆刻環襯頁)

The front and rear endpapers feature a sophisticated rust-red rubbed texture design adorned with various cinnabar and white-ink artist seals (Hanko) and signatures used by Yoshitoshi and his contemporaries (such as Kuniyoshi). This thoughtful decorative choice serves as an exquisite visual tribute to traditional Japanese printmaking craftsmanship.
