Synopsis
From One China to the Other is a seminal photobook capturing one of the most cataclysmic geopolitical shifts of the 20th century. Edited by Robert Delpire, this volume brings together 144 exquisite gravure photographs taken by the legendary master of the "decisive moment," Henri Cartier-Bresson, during his travels in China between December 1948 and September 1949. Sent on assignment for Life magazine, Cartier-Bresson documented the dramatic final days of the Nationalist (Kuomintang) regime and the immediate aftermath of the Communist takeover. Accompanied by a poignant preface and insightful contextual text by the acclaimed novelist Han Suyin, the book layout provides a deeply humanistic, unbiased, and visually stunning narrative of ordinary people caught in the tides of historical revolution.
Historical Background & Significance
This 1956 Universe Books edition is widely regarded by collectors as an essential pillar of documentary photography history. Famously described by legendary photojournalist Robert Capa as a "bible for photographers," the book stands out for its exceptional use of the photogravure printing process, which yields deep ink densities and unmatched tonal depth. Cartier-Bresson’s imagery—ranging from frantic gold rushes on the Shanghai Bund and the final chaotic sessions of the Nationalist parliament in Nanking to the serene daily lives continuing in Beijing's historic streets—transcends simple news reportage. It represents an artistic and historical archive of unparalleled value, captures systemic transitions without ideological bias, and remains a cornerstone for any serious collection of East Asian history or fine art photography.
Condition Report
Very Good Antiquarian Condition (1956 First American Edition / No Dust Jacket). The book is bound in its original rough tan cloth covers, featuring clean, unfaded white-stamped titles on the front board and spine. The cloth shows light, natural age-toning and very minor shelf wear around the corners and spine ends, while remaining structurally sound and tightly bound. Internally, the pages are exceptionally clean, crisp, and bright, with the high-quality photogravure ink remaining rich and vibrant. There are no loose pages, foxing spots, water stains, or modern ink markings inside. A very well-preserved, handsome scholar's copy of a fragile postwar photobook.
