Provenance:
From the private collection of Dr. Albert Keidel, a prominent American development economist specializing in East Asia and a professor at George Washington University (GWU). The history of this volume (/series) is meticulously documented: it was acquired by Dr. Keidel in 1985 (Showa 60) during a personal visit to Isseido Booksellers (一誠堂書店), the historic and venerable authority on Sinology and rare antiquarian books located in Kanda Jinbocho, Tokyo. At the time of purchase, Dr. Keidel—having earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University—was conducting post-doctoral research at the Faculty of Economics, the University of Tokyo. This collection subsequently followed his academic and professional itinerary, traveling across Tokyo, Washington, D.C., Beijing, and various international think tanks, serving as a tangible testament to the cross-cultural exchange between Western Sinology and East Asian economic history in the late 20th century.
Synopsis
Published in Munich by the avant-garde Kurt Wolff Verlag in 1922, this monumental first edition is a milestone in early 20th-century European scholarship on Japanese art . Authored by renowned art historian Ludwig Bachhofer, the book presents a highly rigorous analysis of Ukiyo-e development, complete with 69 exceptional illustrations. It features fine monochrome text illustrations alongside exquisite, full-page tipped-in color plates mounted on heavy black cardstock. These plates showcase historical masterpieces by legendary artists, including Hishikawa Moronobu, Kitagawa Utamaro , and Katsushika Hokusai, sourced from prominent European private estates such as the Crzellitzer and Berger Collections.
Historical Background & Significance
In the early 1920s, German art history was pioneering formalist methodologies. As Bachhofer notes in his preface, this work represents the very first systematic application of Heinrich Wölfflin’s groundbreaking principles of art analysis to the evolution of Japanese woodblock prints. Moving away from pure aesthetic romanticism, Bachhofer traces the formal development of Ukiyo-e from its East Asian roots—citing early Tang Dynasty Buddhist printing and Aurel Stein's Dunhuang discoveries—to its golden age in Edo. Published by Kurt Wolff, renowned for championing Expressionism and high-end graphic arts books ("Die Graphischen Bücher" series), this volume stands as a testament to the intersection of German intellectual rigor and Western Japonisme.
Condition Report
Good to Very Good Antiquarian Condition. Preserved in its original tan paper-covered hardcover boards with striking dark brown typography on the front. The spine has been historically and neatly reinforced with professional bookbinding cloth tape, exhibiting expected light rubbing to edges and corners. Inside, the text pages and endpapers remain remarkably clean and crisp for a century-old European volume, showing minimal foxing. All 69 illustrations are present, and the tipped-in color woodblock reproductions remain vibrant, securely attached, and highly detailed. The front inner board features an authentic, vintage bookseller label from the legendary "Isseido Booksellers" in Kanda, Tokyo.
(Highlights & Unique Provenance)
Detail 1: The Legendary Isseido Provenance
Visible on the top-right of image 2 is the original vintage sticker from the world-renowned Isseido Booksellers in Kanda, Tokyo. This indicates that this 1922 Munich publication traveled to Japan, where it was curated by the country's most prestigious antiquarian book dealer before entering circulation again, adding an exceptional layer of global provenance.
Detail 2: High-End Tipped-in Plates
As demonstrated in photos above, the color illustrations utilize the premium historical tipped-in technique. Instead of being directly printed on the text paper, the high-fidelity color reproductions are carefully individual-cut and mounted by their top edges onto heavy black cardstock inserts. This meticulous craftsmanship preserves the depth of the artwork and represents the golden age of Weimar-era book production.
