JF Salon Announcement of February

二月的季風人文講壇,將展開一組關於權力、自由與日常生活的重要對話:國際人權行動者、香港觀察共同創辦人 Benedict Rogers(羅傑斯) 從三十年的親歷出發討論中國人權與全球秩序;
前加拿大國家安全分析師 Dennis Molinaro(牟丹尼) 揭示民主制度如何在看不見的層面遭遇中共的干預;長期書寫中國社會與科技的記者、作家 Yi-Ling Liu 回望被審查的中國互聯網如何形成;
政治經濟香港學者、Johns Hopkins University教授 Ho-fung Hung (孔誥烽) 追溯西方歷史中對中國的想像;作家、前餐廳主廚 TW Lim 從飲食切入城市、文化與價值;

At the start of February, JF Salon continues its conversations on power, freedom, history, technology, and everyday life. Across politics, digital space, migration, political economy, and culture, this month’s events examine how individuals and societies respond to systems of control, inequality, and global transformation — and what responsibility, imagination, and agency remain possible.

The Fight for the New World Order: Dictatorship versus Democracy

Based on his book The China Nexus, Benedict Rogers offers a first-hand account of China’s political environment over the past three decades. Drawing on personal experience, investigative work, and sustained engagement with Asia, this talk examines China’s human rights crisis, its expanding global influence, and the challenges democratic societies face in responding effectively. Rather than abstract geopolitics, the discussion centers on lived realities — repression, resistance, and the difficult choices confronting governments, institutions, and individuals today.

About the Speaker

Benedict Rogers 羅傑斯 is a human rights activist and writer specializing in Asia. He is Senior Director at Fortify Rights and the co-founder and Chair of Hong Kong Watch. Beginning his career as a journalist in Hong Kong shortly after the 1997 handover, Rogers has spent over 25 years working on human rights issues across China, Hong Kong, Myanmar, North Korea, and the broader region. In 2017, he was denied entry to Hong Kong and has since faced sustained legal and personal pressure from Chinese authorities. He is the author of seven books and a frequent commentator in international media.

China's Secret War in Canada and What It Means for the United States

For decades, Western governments believed economic engagement would lead to political liberalization. Drawing on his book Under Assault, Dennis Molinaro challenges this assumption by tracing how Beijing conducted long-term campaigns of espionage, political interference, and influence operations — using Canada as a strategic testing ground with direct implications for the United States. This talk examines how democratic institutions were compromised, why warning signs were ignored, and what lessons can be drawn for defending open societies today.

About the Speaker

Dennis Molinaro 牟丹尼 is a former national security analyst and policy advisor for the Canadian federal government. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and specializes in the history of security, counterintelligence, and foreign interference. His research and commentary focus on how democratic states respond — and sometimes fail to respond — to covert threats. Molinaro is a frequent media commentator and has taught courses on espionage, human rights law, and national security at leading Canadian universities.

She was previously China Editor at Rest of World and is currently based in London as a journalist-in-residence at the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism.

The China Question: Eight Centuries of Fantasy and Fear

For centuries, Western views of China have oscillated between idealization and fear, often serving shifting political and economic agendas. In this talk, Ho-fung Hung examines how these images were constructed, mobilized, and repurposed across different historical periods — from early modern encounters to contemporary global capitalism. By linking long-term structural change with the politics of ideas, the discussion asks why simplified narratives about China persist, and why open, critical debate remains essential for moving beyond both romanticization and demonization.

About the Speaker

Ho-fung Hung 孔誥烽 is the Henry M. and Elizabeth P. Wiesenfeld Professor of Political Economy in the Department of Sociology and the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on global political economy, state formation, and China’s changing position in the world system. Hung’s work is known for bridging historical sociology with contemporary policy debates.

Eating in Singapore: A Conversation with Tse Wei Lim & Chantal Tseng

Singapore’s food culture is globally celebrated, yet deeply shaped by economic pressures, migration, colonial legacies, and questions of identity. In this conversation, TW Lim and Chantal Tseng explore how food reveals tensions between tradition and modernization, affordability and aspiration, authenticity and reinvention. Moving beyond nostalgia, the discussion considers what Singapore’s culinary landscape can teach us about the Sinosphere, cultural memory, and the future of cities facing similar pressures.

About the Speakers

Tse Wei Lim writes about food and value — “the regard that something is held to deserve.” Formerly the chef-owner of Journeyman in Somerville, MA, he is the author of Little Perfections: Eating in Singapore and now writes primarily on his Substack, Let Them Eat Cake. Born and raised in Singapore, he now divides his time between Cambridge, MA and Falls Church, VA.

Moderator: Chantal Tseng is a hospitality veteran, published writer, and founder of Literary Cocktails. With over 25 years in the industry, she is known for blending drinks, literature, and community through education-forward experiences.
