Rushan Abbas discusses her memoir. The book traces her path from student life in Urumchi to global advocacy, chronicling three generations’ fight for freedom. Interwoven with excerpts from her late father’s unpublished memoir, it reveals an Uyghur intellectual’s life during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Through her story, Abbas exposes China’s authoritarian agenda and its global threat to democracy, offering firsthand insights into the human cost of repression and the enduring pursuit of justice.
About the Speaker
Rushan Abbas is the Founder and Executive Director of Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) and a leading Uyghur rights advocate. After her sister’s unjust detention in 2018, she emerged as a global voice for Uyghur freedom, briefing lawmakers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and the EU. Abbas also serves on international human rights boards. Her work has earned the Freedom Fighter Award (2019) and Huntington Her Hero Lifetime Achievement Award (2024). Under her leadership, CFU received the World Democracy Courage Tribute (2021) and Nobel Peace Prize nominations (2022, 2025).
