April JF Salon Announcement
In April 2025, we will host five enriching JF Salon events covering contemporary Chinese identity, Asian American healing, humanitarian history, Ukrainian war politics, and stories of Chinese Communist Party reformers. We have invited renowned journalists, scholars, and historians to explore the profound meanings of global politics, cultural identity, historical narratives, and social transformation.
在2025年4月，我們將舉辦五場豐富的季風人文講壇活動，涵蓋當代中國身份認同、亞裔美國人療癒、人道主義歷史、烏克蘭戰爭政治以及中國共產黨改革者的故事。我們邀請到著名記者、學者、歷史學家，共同探討全球政治、文化認同、歷史敘事與社會變革的深層意義。
April 4: Emily Feng (Journalist & Author) — "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom: Identity and Belonging in Today's China"
Award-winning NPR correspondent Emily Feng will share her new book "Let Only Red Flowers Bloom," deeply exploring the struggles of identity in Xi Jinping's China. Through vivid narratives, she documents the resistance stories of Uyghur families, human rights lawyers, Inner Mongolian teachers, and Hong Kong fugitives, revealing how people survive with dignity in an increasingly closed country.

April 5: Dr. Stacey Diane Arañez Litam (Professor & Author) — "Diasporic Healing in Asian American Communities"
Dr. Litam will share her inspiring new book "Patterns That Remain," exploring how Asian Americans find healing from historical traumas, immigration experiences, and cultural patterns. Combining academic research, personal interviews, and cultural perspectives, she offers a hopeful framework for personal growth and healing for Asian Americans and children of immigrants.

A professor, researcher, and mental health clinician with Filipino and Chinese immigrant backgrounds, Dr. Litam is dedicated to researching mental health and cultural identity among Asian Americans.

April 11: Jack Neubauer (Historian & Author) — "From Adoption Plan to Adoption Ban: The Politics of Global Humanitarianism in China"
Historian Jack Neubauer will explore global humanitarianism during World War II and the Cold War, focusing on how international child sponsorship became a crucial transnational aid strategy. His new book "The Adoption Plan" reveals how Chinese children became archetypes of global humanitarian imagination, and how Nationalist and Communist parties leveraged emotional bonds between children and sponsors to gain international support.

Jack Neubauer is a young historian specializing in the history of global humanitarianism, with a particular focus on transnational aid dynamics during World War II and the Cold War.

April 14: Independent Documentary Screening: "Miners, Muleteers, and Pneumoconiosis" Director: Jiang Nejie
This screening will present Jiang Nejie's documentary, delving deep into the living conditions and occupational health hazards of Chinese miners, revealing the struggles of the working class in the process of modernization.

April 17: Lucian Kim (Journalist & Author) — "Putin's Revenge: Why Russia Invaded Ukraine"
Veteran journalist Lucian Kim will share his latest work on the Russia-Ukraine War, tracing the historical context from Ukraine's Orange Revolution to the Crimean annexation. He will dissect Putin's transformation from a pragmatic leader to a dictator with a sense of historical mission, analyzing the imperialist legacy and political motivations behind this conflict.

April 25: Robert L. Suettinger (Historian & Author) — "The Conscience of the Party: Hu Yaobang, China's Communist Reformer"
Historian Robert L. Suettinger will share his authoritative biography "The Conscience of the Party," comprehensively tracing Hu Yaobang's life. From a party cadre favored during Mao's era, through persecution during the Cultural Revolution, to becoming a reformist leader during Deng Xiaoping's period, Suettinger meticulously reconstructs the life of this controversial Communist Party leader.
