This book focuses on the development of cities in the old industrial belt (Rust Belt, such as Detroit and Baltimore) in the American Midwest over the past few decades. It traces the social and economic background of the decline of these old industrial cities and introduces three important demographic factors currently affecting their revitalization: millennials yearning for urban life, immigrants, and a shrinking middle class. It further reveals the uneven and unequal revitalization process in these cities that are resisting the broad trend of economic decline. The disparity between rich and poor regions is becoming increasingly severe, with areas possessing better employment and public facilities often being the first to recover, while other areas continue to struggle in decline. Finally, the author proposes a series of revitalization strategies and directions for old industrial cities.
