My name is Zhashiyiruo: Zha is my family name, Shiyi (eleven) is the season I was born, and Ruo is a type of grass. I was born in 1990, into the Flowery Waist
Yi ethnic group, and grew up in a mountain village deep in Yunnan. This book records my growth, attempts to outline the trajectory of my thirty-four years of life so far, and also attempts to leave some life chronicles for my female relatives and villagers.
In the early years, the village was poor, and life was inevitably bumpy and difficult, but it was not without natural romance: flowers, trees, sunshine, streams, mountains and fields,
cats and dogs, cattle and horses, birds, playmates... The flowing rural scenery accompanied my childhood years, weaving old dreams that softened the soul.
The changes in the private lives of me, my mother, my sister, my female relatives and villagers, two generations of Yi rural women, have, with social development, presented a lagging but flourishing landscape. As someone born in 1990, my process of growing up, going to school, working, and migrating has accompanied the acceleration of the country's urbanization process, and also the loss of rural memories and frontier experiences. I hope that through my writing, I can preserve a record of the people, events, and customs of the village in the old days.
In my village, many things are certain. I know the cattle won't run away, and I know the sun will set on time. I will go home with the cattle, eat dinner, and then fall into a dream.
