"Dubliners" was written between 1904 and 1907 and consists of fifteen short stories. According to Joyce himself, these stories can be divided into four parts: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and social life. "The Sisters," "An Encounter," and "Araby" describe childhood; "Eveline," "After the Race," and "Two Gallants" depict adolescent states of mind; "The Boarding House," "A Little Cloud," "Counterparts," "Clay," and "A Painful Case" can be seen as inner portrayals of adults; while "Ivy Day in the Committee Room," "A Mother," "Grace," and "The Dead" reflect the dreary and hypocritical social life of Dublin at the end of the 19th century.
