This volume is an extraordinary archival treasure from the golden era of Washington D.C.’s Chinese book trade. The book itself, Symposium on Historical, Archaeological and Linguistic Studies on Southern China, South-East Asia and the Hong Kong Region, was published by Hong Kong University Press in 1967 (limited to 1,500 copies). It represents the proceedings of the Golden Jubilee Congress of the University of Hong Kong.

• The Fulton Liu Legacy: Included is an original, handwritten letter dated December 13, 1978, from Fulton Liu, the influential proprietor of the legendary Chinese bookstore in D.C.'s Chinatown. In the letter, Liu notes the difficulty in locating this rare volume after the closure of Vetch and Lee Limited in Hong Kong.

• The Recipient: The book was a personal gift for Dr. Claude Pickens Jr.. A handwritten note on the endpaper confirms it was "Received 15-2-79 from Fulton Liu," marking the pivotal moment of the formal normalization of U.S.-China relations.

• Historical Bridge: This copy traces a direct path from the historical Chinatown literary hub to the library of Senior Diplomat Stephen A. Schlaikjer.
