The 1967 riots can be described as a watershed in Hong Kong's post-war history. This book analyzes the causes, course, and impact of the 1967 riots, detailing the fuse that lit the unrest and major events, including the Sha Tau Kok border conflict, the wave of bombings, and the burning of the British Chargé d'Affaires' office in Beijing. Based on recently declassified British government secret files, this book reveals the British government's strategies for handling the unrest and Anglo-Chinese relations at the time. The author interviewed many people from both the Hong Kong British government and the pro-Beijing camp, including David Ford, the personal assistant to the Governor responsible for suppressing the riots, Liang Shangyuan, the deputy director of the Xinhua News Agency Hong Kong Branch, Jasper Tsang, who is currently the President of the Legislative Council, and Tsang Tak-sing, the Secretary for Home Affairs. The author also recounts the experiences of many participants who responded to the pro-Beijing camp's call to participate in the anti-British protests and paid a heavy price. As some of the interviewees have since passed away, these valuable interview records provide indispensable oral history material for this period of history.
