Professor Henrietta Harrison uses the case of Dong'ergou in Shanxi to offer a vision far beyond the "Rites Controversy" or "cultural adaptation"—since the arrival of Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century, Catholicism has adapted to traditional Chinese culture. However, Chinese and foreign missionaries, congregants, and the Roman Curia, through various conflicts and compromises, inadvertently formed a combined force attempting to pull the local church into the global development trend, a process that continues to this day.
