Poetry is indeed an interference with the mundane. The enemy of poetry is not the other, but external institutions and life. This poetry collection is full of remnants, things that have endured the crushing weight of life yet have not disappeared. Can one truly think through poetry? Or is poetry merely the receptacle for failed thoughts? The subject is inherently incomplete; when the rumbling train of life speeds by on schedule, the remaining debris, once again altered in shape, becomes "our song heard by the world / which is actually a scream." Is that enough? It seems not quite. After an eight-year hiatus, Deng Xiaohua's second poetry collection, "The Other Side of All Sounds," approaches her, or rather, equals approaching her other side.
