The violence of China’s Cultural Revolution is well known, but its most extreme form—mass killings—is rarely discussed. Between 1967 and 1968, mass killings in the form of public executions and internecine slaughter were widespread in rural China, with astonishing breadth and depth. This book is the first to systematically document and analyze this brutal phenomenon, drawing on local archives, publicly available government materials, and interviews with survivors from two southern provinces. The research focuses on the behavior of ordinary people in rural areas, exploring the deep-seated logic behind the millions who voluntarily participated in the Cultural Revolution and even mass killings. The author proposes a highly explanatory “community model” that challenges the “state policy model” adopted by mainstream genocide studies. The book achieves remarkable success in both revealing historical facts and constructing theory. As the author says, “Everyone says the Cultural Revolution was caused by ignorance, but without in-depth research, we probably will never understand where that ignorance lies.”
