This is a biography of the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig. Stefan Zweig was one of the most popular and widely read writers of the 20th century, renowned for his subtle insight into and moving portrayal of human desires. His life was marked by brilliant literary achievements, but also by the deep shadows of personal tragedy.
In this new biography, Matzuschik uses previously little-known exclusive archival materials to reconstruct Zweig’s creations, relationships, and choices, unfolding his life in three acts: "Apprentice," "Renowned," and "Exile." He also re-examines Zweig's struggles and suicide in exile in Brazil from a new perspective. Zweig, like the polar explorer Scott in his own writings, became a "successful failure" devoured by the maelstrom of his era's conflicts.
The biography combines rich historical materials with clear narration, supplementing the significant private details missing from Zweig's autobiography, "The World of Yesterday," allowing us a glimpse into the inner world of this master of psychological insight. The "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" praised it as "undoubtedly the definitive Zweig biography from now on," while the "Times Literary Supplement" called it "a book that offers astonishing insights."
