Perfect Face

This is an investigative work. The author, a young Asian woman, was assigned to Seoul from Washington in 2015 to report on international news, and was transferred back to the United States in 2018. From the moment she set foot in Seoul, she was bombarded by the beauty craze, facing the scrutiny of men and even women around her every day. Coupled with the massive billboards at work and living spaces, and the display screens outside buildings, the author couldn't help but be affected, finding it difficult to even face herself in the mirror. Using this as a clue, she began to investigate the South Korean beauty industry, examine South Korean popular culture, contact grassroots groups of South Korean women organized to fight against the beauty industry's abduction, and listened to the voices of women and even men from all walks of life. Through professional historical investigation and in-depth exploration, combined with personal interviews with countless women, the author questioned the "perfect face" pursued by society, including from the perspectives of gender differences, consumerism, and the aesthetic demand for prioritizing appearance. In addition, she also conducted an in-depth analysis of the impact of the lookism society on global politics, economy, and society.
