历史建筑的重生：日本文化遗产的保护与活用

Historic buildings are one of humanity's important cultural heritages. Their prominent spatial and public attributes always place them under public scrutiny. Precisely because of this, historic buildings consistently face numerous challenges in terms of protection and restoration. Japan's protection of historic buildings began with their demolition and destruction at the start of modernization. The rapid disappearance of a large number of historic buildings fostered a sense of protection in people's minds. From ancient temples and shrines, to castles and modern buildings as urban symbols, and then to residences and traditional streets that shaped daily life, the criteria for evaluating historic buildings have continuously evolved through exploration, and the objects of protection have become diverse. Over more than a hundred years, based on this, Japan has completed a large number of practices in the restoration of historic buildings and the maintenance of traditional landscapes. This book focuses on the process of Japan establishing protection systems related to historic buildings, and attempts to review discussions about the public value of historic buildings with restoration as the focal point. When protecting historic buildings, how to balance "historical and cultural value," "architectural artistic value," and "practical economic value" is a question that still requires our collective thought today.
