This book takes the seven to eight hundred years of change in the "Chaju" (recommendation) system for selecting officials—a system established in the Han Dynasty and eventually evolving into the imperial examination system in the Sui and Tang Dynasties—as its research subject. The book identifies three main driving forces constraining the evolution of the Chaju system: bureaucratic rational administration, the distribution of privileges and power struggles under the imperial political system, and the dynamics of the intellectual group that served as the source of imperial officials. Based on this, the author meticulously examines and organizes a large body of relevant historical materials. On this foundation, the book conducts an in-depth analysis and insightful exposition of the forms, interrelationships, and changes of factors such as "selecting people based on virtue," "selecting people based on ability," "selecting people based on literary talent," "selecting people based on reputation," and "selecting people based on family background" within the Chaju system. This provides a unique interpretation of the system's emergence, development, and evolution into the imperial examination system.
