This book details the controversial life of Feng Dao (882-954). On the one hand, Feng Dao lived during the chaotic period of the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, serving five dynasties (Later Tang, Later Jin, Liao, Later Han, Later Zhou), eight families (one for each of Emperor Zhuangzong, Mingzong, and Modiwang of Later Tang; the Shi family of Later Jin; the Yelü family of Liao; the Liu family of Later Han; and one for each of Emperor Taizu and Shizong of Later Zhou), and eleven emperors. He held high-ranking positions for thirty years and served as prime minister for over twenty years. On the other hand, Feng Dao advised rulers, cared for the people's welfare, and promoted cultural development, striving to maintain order amidst chaos. This involved both reluctant compromises and active struggles and perseverance. Feng Dao is like a mirror, reflecting ideals and life in times of turmoil.
