“Wang Anshi” is a 1.1-million-word historical novel written by Wan Binsheng, a writer from Linchuan, Jiangxi, over a period of ten years. It is divided into three parts: “Gongming” (Fame), “Xinku” (Hardship), and “Luanzhen” (Confusion). To complete the work, the author visited all the places where Wang Anshi lived. The novel takes the social reforms during the Xifeng reign of the Northern Song Dynasty as its background, fully presenting Wang Anshi’s journey of implementing new policies and his life trajectory, covering fields such as politics, economy, military, and culture and art. Through the implementation of reform measures such as the Equalization System (Junshufa) and the Green Sprouts Act (Qingmiaofa), and the struggles between the new and old parties, the novel portrays Wang Anshi as a reformer deeply connected with the common people. At the same time, it provides multi-dimensional characterizations of historical figures such as Emperor Shenzong Zhao Xu, Sima Guang, and Su Shi, and creates fictional supporting characters that conform to historical logic.
