On February 12, 1912, Puyi abdicated, and the Qing Empire abruptly collapsed. However, the end of the dynasty was not the end; it left behind a group of "old guard and young remnants" for the nascent Republic. These former high-ranking Qing officials, once powerful and influential, were now relegated to the "margins" of the era, their later lives lost to history.
This book tells the story of such a group of people, selecting 14 representative late Qing high officials and using historical facts to reconstruct their lives in the Republic of China. It narrates how they witnessed drastic historical changes, how they made new political choices, how they wavered between the old and the new, and how they rebuilt their lives amidst regret and predicament.
Li Jingxi, Zhang Zhenfang, Tang Shaoyi, and Wu Tingfang, who "kept pace with the times" and joined the Republic's government,
Yikuang, Natong, and Zhang Renjun, who chose to "mind their own business" and live in seclusion,
Shanqi, Puwei, and Shengyun, who "opposed the Republic" and actively sought restoration...
Their fluctuating fates transcend the joys and sorrows of individual lives; they are also a microcosm of the social transformation at the turn of the Qing and Republic eras, outlining another脉络 for the history of the Republic of China, which has been overshadowed by mainstream narratives, allowing future generations to re-examine that complex, multi-layered transitional period of old and new.
