"Dubliners" was written between 1904 and 1907, and consists of fifteen short stories. According to Joyce himself, these stories can be divided into four parts: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and social life. Among them, "The Sisters", "An Encounter", and "Araby" depict childhood; "Eveline", "After the Race", and "Two Gallants" portray adolescent moods; "Boarding House", "A Little Cloud", "Counterparts", "Clay", and "A Painful Case" can be seen as inner reflections of adults; while "Ivy Day in the Committee Room", "A Mother", "Grace", and "The Dead" reflect the dreary and hypocritical social life of Dublin at the end of the 19th century.
