Carefully compiled and edited by Professor Qian Suoqiao of the City University of Hong Kong, this landmark volume brings together 25 pairs of bilingual essays written by Lin Yutang between 1930 and 1936. Featured works include seminal pieces such as "A Hymn to Shanghai," "Han Fei as a Cure for Modern China," "The Other Side of Confucius," "What Is Face?," and "On Political Sickness." Rather than presenting simple translations, this collection juxtaposes Lin’s adaptive rewritings tailored for distinct Chinese and Western audiences, making it an indispensable resource for understanding 20th-century cross-cultural intellectual discourse.

Lin Yutang (1895–1976) was one of the most influential bilingual intellectuals of the twentieth century, praised by The New York Times as "wise, humorous and altogether charming." While history celebrates his major English monographs, his bilingual essay pairs offer a masterful look into his dual identity. Lin did not merely translate himself; he radically adapted the tone, style, and content of each version to suit the psychological and cultural landscape of his respective audiences. This anthology restores these scattered bilingual texts to print, illuminating Lin’s enduring wit, sharp cultural insights, and sophisticated dark humor for a modern generation.
