DESCRIPTION & SUMMARY

Summary

Published in 1974 by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this landmark volume investigates the profound impact of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcuts—by masters such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Utamaro—on 19th-century French printmaking. Author Colta Feller Ives meticulously demonstrates how the French Impressionists and the Nabis incorporated bolder, flatter forms, asymmetrical compositions, and striking viewpoints into their own graphics. Through side-by-side comparisons of 114 illustrations (including 24 in full color), the book details the historical "cult of Japan" that inspired iconic artists from Manet, Degas, and Cassatt, to Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND & SIGNIFICANCE

(Provenance):

 Significance:

Following the opening of Japan in 1854, the influx of Japanese artifacts and prints sparked a monumental shift in Western aesthetics known as Japonisme. The bold graphic language of Ukiyo-e served as a primary catalyst for European Modernism. Ives' work remains a cornerstone study documenting this cross-cultural artistic dialogue.

Distinguished Provenance:

This copy hails from the academic repository of the renowned East Asian economist Dr. Albert Keidel. Acquired during his time in New York City in March 1975, the volume bears his bold "KEIDEL" ownership mark on the flyleaf. Adding extraordinary collector appeal, the cloth-bound hardcover features a distinct, elegant Japanese crest (Kamon) ink stamp on the back—perfectly bridging the book's scholarly content with the collector's deep personal affinity for East Asian heritage.

CONDITION REPORT

 整體品相 (Overall Condition): 良好至極好(Very Good+)。

Structurally sound with an excellent interior.

Complete with the original illustrated yellow dust jacket. The jacket shows light shelf wear along the edges, with minor age-toning or faint scuffs near the top-center of the front cover. The colors remain vibrant, and the original first-edition price flap ($15.00) is clipped/intact.

Bound in the original mustard-yellow cloth hardcover. The spine is square and the binding remains tight and firm. Notably, there is a highly distinct, neatly inked black Japanese crest (Kamon) stamp on the lower-right corner of the back cover, adding a highly unique touch.

The internal pages are in fine condition, clean and crisp with beautifully preserved illustrations; no tears, creases, or dog-ears. The front flyleaf features the previous owner's bold ink signature "KEIDEL" at the top, accompanied by the handwritten acquisition date and location "3-75 N.Y.C." underneath. The remainder of the text block is pristine, free of any marginalia, underlining, or highlighting.
