First Edition, published in 1942 by The John Day Company, New York, Dragon Seed is one of Nobel Laureate Pearl S. Buck's most powerful and historic novels set in wartime China.
A spiritual successor to The Good Earth, Dragon Seed tells the poignant story of Ling Tan, a peaceful farmer living near Nanking, and his family as their lives are shattered by the Japanese invasion in the late 1930s. Buck vividly describes the brutality of foreign occupation and the fierce, underground resistance forged by ordinary Chinese villagers. The novel was a massive bestseller during World War II and was famously adapted into the 1944 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film starring Katharine Hepburn.
📜 Historical Significance & Provenance
A Pivotal WWII Literary Artifact: Written between 1941 and 1942, Dragon Seed provided American readers with a deeply empathetic, eye-witness-style portrayal of China's struggle during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Rape of Nanking, helping shape American public support for China during WWII.
Includes Rare 1942 Book-of-the-Month Club Ephemera: Attached/inserted in the endpapers is the rare original 4-page feature from the January 1942 Book-of-the-Month Club News. It features a portrait photo of Pearl S. Buck and a moving contemporary review by famed critic Dorothy Canfield, offering exceptional historical provenance.
