This is a highly collectable, early printing of one of the most landmark documents of the American Civil Rights Movement: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s historic Letter from Birmingham City Jail, written on April 16, 1963, during his confinement in Alabama.

In May 1963, after major newspapers hesitated to print the text in full, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker organization, received permission from King to publish the letter as an independent, single-volume pamphlet for wide distribution.

 Third Printing (June 1963): As detailed on the back cover printing register, this copy is from the coveted Third Printing of 30,000 copies, printed just one month after the first edition.

 Historical Context Included: The pamphlet contains the complete, stirring text of Dr. King’s plea for non-violent direct action, preceded by the "Call for Unity" statement by the eight white Alabama clergymen that prompted King's reply, and an introductory preface by Colin Bell, Executive Secretary of the AFSC.

 Binding: Original stapled pictorial paper wrappers (9" x 6"). Staples are intact and holding firmly.

 Interior & Exterior: Exceptionally well-preserved for such an ephemeral historic item. The white covers are crisp with only minor age-toning, and the interior pages remain clean, bright, and completely free of any markings or tears.
