From the Archive of a Legend: Traditional Chinese Tales (1944 First Ed.) —— Owned by Claude L. Pickens, Jr. (Harvard Collection), Grandfather of Stephen Schlaikjer
A truly museum-quality association copy from the personal library of diplomat Stephen Schlaikjer, tracing back to one of the most significant American chroniclers of 20th-century China.
• Harvard-Collected Heritage: The book features the personal bookplate of Claude L. Pickens, Jr. (known in China as Bi Jing-shi). A pioneering missionary-scholar, Pickens’ life’s work—comprising thousands of rare photographs of Chinese culture—is now a cornerstone collection at Harvard’s Harvard-Yenching Library.
• Family Provenance: This volume represents a direct line of descent from the legendary Pickens to his grandson, the senior diplomat Stephen Schlaikjer. Purchased in April 1944, it survived the evacuation from Hankow to become a cherished heirloom in the Schlaikjer household.
• A Scholarly Gateway: To own this copy is to hold the same pages once turned by the man whose lens captured a vanishing China for the world's premier academic institutions.
