英文書單同樣精彩:李翊雲(Yiyun Li)的新長篇《Music Against the Night》(本店備有作者親簽本)與她獲PEN/Faulkner獎的《The Book of Goose》雙雙上榜;甫獲2026年諾貝爾文學獎的安・卡森(Anne Carson)以《The Beauty of the Husband》入列;扶霞(Fuchsia Dunlop)的新食譜、Emily Feng追蹤維吾爾流亡武裝的調查、Logan Wright剖析中國經濟困局的《Broken China》、《柏青哥》作者Min Jin Lee的新作,以及一冊恰逢萬聖節的京都怪談集,構成這個月最多元的閱讀版圖。
October's list opens with a milestone for us: Cheng Lei's account of her 1,154 days in Chinese state-security detention — the first book from JF Publishing — went straight to No. 1 on the Chinese list. Desmond Shum's Red Roulette charted in both Chinese and English, and the sixtieth anniversary of the Cultural Revolution continues to shape our readers' choices, from Ding Xueliang's memoir of his Red Guard youth and a new chronology of Chen Boda to a fresh edition of Jung Chang's Wild Swans. Wu Si's expanded study of "blood pay" in Chinese history, Zha Jianying and Kato Yoshikazu's dialogues on freedom, essays by Ye Fu and Liu Zongkun, and Eileen Chang's posthumous Little Reunions round out the list. On the English side, Yiyun Li has two titles — her new novel Music Against the Night (signed copies in store) and the PEN/Faulkner-winning The Book of Goose — while Anne Carson's The Beauty of the Husband returns in the wake of her 2026 Nobel Prize. Fuchsia Dunlop's new cookbook, Emily Feng's reporting on Uyghur fighters in Syria, Logan Wright on China's stalled economy, Min Jin Lee's American Hagwon and, just in time for Halloween, eighty-seven ghost stories from Kyoto complete a richly varied month.

Five Tastes: Delicious Recipes for Chinese Flavors
Fuchsia Dunlop 扶霞 / W. W. Norton & Company
In ancient China, the "five tastes" — sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty — stood not only for flavors on the tongue but for the whole palette at a cook's command, and a good chef was something of a magician who could bring them into harmony. Fuchsia Dunlop, the James Beard Award–winning author of The Food of Sichuan and Invitation to a Banquet, who trained as a chef in Chengdu in the 1990s, distills that philosophy into 120 approachable recipes for the home kitchen. Centered on vegetables but with some meat and fish, the book pairs regional classics with inventive dishes that marry Chinese seasonings to whatever you find at a farmers' market or supermarket — from green beans in "strange-flavor" sauce and a cool fish-fragrant eggplant salad to spicy peanut-butter noodles and Shanghainese seaweed cookies. Published October 20, it is a cookbook to read as much as to cook from.
Our Hearts Burned for Home: Uyghur Militants in Syria's Civil War
Emily Feng, with Abduweli Ayup / Columbia Global Reports
What drove a few thousand Uyghur men and women from the deserts and cities of western China to the front lines of Syria's civil war? Journalist Emily Feng traces their path from the crushed protests of 1990s Xinjiang to the Islamist battlegrounds of Idlib — and to the part they played in the eventual fall of Bashar al-Assad. At the heart of her reporting lies a paradox: Beijing's campaign of surveillance and cultural erasure, meant to stamp out dissent, instead scattered and radicalized a generation, while turmoil in the Middle East gave them somewhere to fight. Drawing on rare access to fighters and their families, and written with the Uyghur writer Abduweli Ayup, the book explores how a stateless people came to take up arms far from home, and how their controversial revolution now bears on Syria's fragile future.
Music Against the Night (Signed by Yiyun Li)
Yiyun Li 李翊雲 / Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Yiyun Li's new novel brings two real figures of the Romantic era vividly back to life. In late-eighteenth-century Dublin, the awkward, prodigiously gifted John Field is groomed by his family as the next Mozart; his talent carries him to England, France, and finally Russia, where he becomes a celebrated pianist and composes the dreamy pieces he calls nocturnes — a form Chopin would later make immortal. Oceans away in Pondicherry, in French India, the orphaned Adelaide Percheron, raised by an imperious grandmother and set apart from her cousins by her parents' differing ancestry, nurses a secret love of the pianoforte and engineers her escape to Paris and then Moscow, just as Napoleon's armies march across the continent. Destined to become husband and wife, the two must weigh talent against genius, success against legacy, and decide what — and whom — art is worth sacrificing. Signed copies available.
Broken China: How the Economic Miracle Shattered and What it Means for the World
Logan Wright / Polity
After decades of breakneck growth, China's economy has stalled — and Logan Wright, who has spent years analyzing the Chinese financial sector on the ground, argues that the roots of the slowdown lie in finance: an unprecedented credit expansion that has finally run its course. Challenging the popular image of Beijing's leaders as master long-term planners, he shows that no grand strategy ever anticipated the boom and bust that now constrains their options. The result is not a sudden crisis or collapse but a slow decay of the state's economic policy tools — arriving just as mounting pressure at home and abroad makes a global backlash against Chinese exports the last thing Beijing can afford. A clear-eyed account of how the economic miracle broke, and why the consequences will be felt far beyond China's borders.
The Book of Goose
Yiyun Li 李翊雲 / Picador
Winner of the 2023 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. When Agnès, now living quietly in Pennsylvania, learns that her childhood friend Fabienne has died, she is finally free to tell their story. As girls in a war-ravaged village in the French countryside, the two built a private world no one else could see — until Fabienne hatched a plan that turned Agnès into a literary sensation and carried her from rural France to Paris and an English boarding school, through fame, fortune, and terrible loss. A story of disturbing intimacy and obsession, of exploitation and strength of will, it shares with this month's Music Against the Night Li's enduring fascination with talent, authorship, and the price a gifted life exacts.
American Hagwon
Min Jin Lee / Cardinal
From the author of Pachinko. Once comfortably middle-class in Korea, John and Helen Koh and their three children — Bo, DH, and Mido — see their lives upended, first by a shocking betrayal from John's oldest friend and then by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. They leave Seoul for Sydney and eventually settle in Southern California, where new opportunities open for the children even as their parents, whose experience and education count for little in a strange land, resolve to do whatever it takes for their futures. Taking its title from the Korean word for a private cram school, the novel ranges across schools and churches, nail salons and law firms, cramped apartments and gated communities, tracing an immigrant family's almost all-consuming faith in education — and how bonds of family and memory fray but rarely break.
The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos
On October 8, the Swedish Academy awarded Anne Carson the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, honoring a bold, inventive body of work that converses playfully with the classical tradition and has created new forms for contemporary writing. This book, winner of the T. S. Eliot Prize, is the ideal way in. Told in twenty-nine "tangos" of narrative verse — which, like a marriage, must be danced to the end — it follows a wife's love for a beautiful, faithless husband through tender, painful, and darkly funny scenes as their long marriage comes apart, all while wrestling with Keats's idea that beauty is truth. Clear-eyed, brutal, and moving, it takes on the oldest lyric subject of all and makes it feel entirely new.
I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki: Conversations with My Psychiatrist
Baek Sehee; translated by Anton Hur / Bloomsbury
Baek Sehee had a successful job as a social media director at a publishing house, yet she felt persistently low and anxious, endlessly doubting herself while judging everyone around her — and still, somehow, she always craved her favorite street food, spicy tteokbokki rice cakes. Was this simply what life was like? Recording twelve weeks of conversations with her psychiatrist and expanding each session into short reflective essays, she begins to untangle the habits of thought that kept her locked in a cycle of self-criticism. Part memoir and part self-help, this Korean phenomenon, translated by International Booker–shortlisted Anton Hur, speaks with disarming honesty to anyone living with depression or quiet unhappiness. Its sequel is also available in store.
Red Roulette: An Insider's Story of Wealth, Power, Corruption, and Vengeance in Today's China
Desmond Shum 沈棟 / Scribner
The English original of this month's No. 2 Chinese title. Desmond Shum grew up poor in China, earned an American college degree, and returned home to build a business alongside his future wife, the brilliant and equally ambitious Whitney Duan. Through ties to the "red aristocracy" at the top of the Communist Party, they vaulted into the billionaire class, developing a vast air-cargo facility at Beijing's airport and one of the city's premier hotels, flying private jets and collecting homes and art. Then in 2017, while Shum was living abroad with their son, Duan vanished along with three colleagues. Named a Best Book of the Year by The Economist and the Financial Times, this explosive memoir shows how the Chinese state keeps business in line — and its publication led to Duan's dramatic reemergence after four years of silence.
Ghostly Kyoto: 87 Supernatural Tales from Japan
Éric Faure / Shambhala
Just in time for Halloween. In Kyoto, ghosts are not merely stories but neighbors, warnings, and sometimes protectors. This atmospheric collection gathers eighty-seven supernatural legends from Japan's old capital, where every shrine, bridge, and cherry tree seems to harbor a haunting: Obon fires guiding the ancestors home, the Demon's Gate, wells said to lead straight to Hell, vengeful onryō, insatiable Hungry Ghosts, monks who bargain with the King of Hell, statues that bleed or move, and women whose longing lingers for centuries. Drawn from old chronicles, temple lore, and the whispered warnings of Kyoto cab drivers, and told with a local's intimacy and a folklorist's curiosity, it is a rare English-language treasury of Japanese ghost tales that will change how you see the city's shadowed lanes.
